Title: Did you ever write your own Z-Fic?
Post by: Grey Wolf on February 23, 2017, 02:21:58 am
What was it called? What was it about?

Yes actually, tho it was for a Shadowrun meets Last of Us crossover setting. It was about a comet that the UN tried to nudge and they rolled a 1.

It shattered and when the fragments vaporized in the atmosphere, they released an alien virus that mutated 1% of humans to have psionic abilities and half of the rest of humans to become like reavers from Firefly that needed to eat fresh meat to survive.

It was a lot of fun until the PCs found out the US and some corps were weaponizing them and factions formed among the psions.

After that it was a bloodbath as protecting humanity devolved into episodes of payback inspired violence and a lot of don't get vivisected.

I actually have a stack of really bad short stories set in a zombie apocalypse I wrote towards the end of and shortly after high school.  The only reason they are of any note whatsoever is I wrote them in the early to mid 90's, before the Resident Evil games or other impetus of the big zombie boom that followed a few years later.

Mine was less fiction than setting up a campaign that could be played in episodic format. I ran it through three and a half 'seasons' before I graduated.

I had a blast running it, though I think it had more to do with the fact that I had actual roleplayers and not a bunch of juveniles throwing C4 at all of their problems. (I will admit that there were a few times the throwing C4 thing actually saved their bacon, and even once the whole mission.)

I'm pretty sure I could have made a halfway decent post-apocalyptic Rescue Rangers kind of tv show out of it if it hadn't been for how it all ended.

I miss pen and paper roll playing.  Or even a reasonable online facsimile thereof.

I've unfortunately proven time and time again that my life is to chaotic to DM anyl onger though.

I hear you there, I miss the days when the Knights of the Dinner Table roamed the countryside righting wrongs and seeing just how much trouble they could barely avoid getting into. Damn technology anyways.

I never got very far on my work. My problem is I tend to create such an expanded universe, that it tends to become hard to keep track of if you don't pay attention to every little detail. What I came up with was basically
a 4 part story spanning nearly a decade.

The first Chapter in this 4 part saga went by the Title " The Journey. An American Zombie Story." It basically set the stage for the rest of the later Chapters by creating the inciting event that would serve as the catalyst for the zombie outbreak. In this case I went with a mysterious event in which thousands of orbs of light descended to earth, and  make contact with people. Those people soon become sick with a mysterious illness which spreads slowly. The story itself takes place months after this event.

I am working on something along these lines myself.

In mine a huge asteroid is spotted and the government attempts to deflect it with nukes. They screw it up and shatter the thing and the numerous pieces slam into the earth. The radioactive fallout mutates an existing strain of the flu, causing victims to suffer the effects of the rage virus. In addition, they only seem to gain sustenance from raw meat or blood, their body cannot heal or survive without  it.

As the survivors of the impact event are forced to scrounge to survive, and fend off other groups while building up supplies and whatnot for the immanent impact winter, they must also worry about infection as well.

It's coming along, I just need to figure out tech levels and how to balance the cozy catastrophe bunch with the gritty survivors who will (and have) tossed an old priest out of a moving truck cause the irritating, pimply faced kid knows computers and the old dude didnt even have a bible anymore......

Yeah it kinda bogs down in those moral gray areas.

The Meat so to speak of my work comes in Story Arc's 2-4. We get to see the world in the years after the first story arc.

I had one idea I wanted to use so much. A man affixes electronics, and remote control equipment to captured Zombies to create his Puppets.

The main character encounters zombies with battle scars, broken teeth, and even jagged pieces of metal stained with blood.

Later on some even begin to mimic words like " Help Me", and " Don't shoot".
