Title: Downtime due to servers underwater in Houston? Or deadites gnawing on cables?
Post by: DochSavage on August 29, 2017, 07:28:58 pm
Just noticed that the site was offline for a good bit of today.
I know some other sites were offline as well because their servers were physically in Houston, TX: Land of Water. (TM, patent pending)

Looks like we went there...and came back this time!

It matters not why it was down, only that it is back and that the Word of Cthullu (pbhn) continues to spread.

I figured I'd give out some basic information.

The servers are part of a set of racks in a US Customs Exam Station/Warehousing company - in Houston, Texas.

The power went out on about 1:30 AM on Sunday morning, after the initial outer bands of storms from Harvey started pounding Houston.   Unfortunately, I was unable to get on site until the flood waters receded.   It shouldn't have been too much of a problem, but the on-site generator had been tested to start and run, but they did -not- test the transfer switch.   When they went to use it, the transfer switch didn't transfer.

Within an hour of power returning, I had all of the systems back online, including TZH.

The road outside was under approximately three feet of water for most of those three days, and even after I got there, one end of the road was under 4 feet of water; you could only get to the building from one direction - with four dead vehicles in the way - two of them turned the wrong direction by the currents (or something).   (The building is 'dock high' above the parking lot, which is 2 feet above the road way, so there was no risk of damage to the servers. )

I have no idea who Bookworm is but apparently he's a hero.

Hero?  Not even close.   I know my limitations, and mostly I stayed out of the way of the responders.   :)

I'm the guy who owns the servers on which TZH runs.

Given the current traffic of the forum nowadays, that's close enough.

Guilty as charged.  It's been slow here for 7a while so I entertain myself when I can.

And welcome to the crazies.  You're one of us now :D

Geez, if I tried to be 'one of you' for all of the sites I support in one way or another, I'd never get anything done.    I just try to check in to various ones periodically for things like this.

Hopefully those going through Irma will come out all right.   Florida is already getting pounded.    The good part?   It's moving about 6 times faster than Harvey.

Understood, but you're always welcome.

On a technical note,
we expecting a sudden surge of traffic on this zombic site.
Relatively soonish.

Wow, sorta haiku-ish.
