Title: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: TheLastOutlaw on March 11, 2010, 06:28:31 am
So, my life is almost back to normal and I actually have free time again so...

Is anyone interested in playing a Hunter the Reckoning Old World of Darkness RP?

It would generally follow the official ruleset though adapted for forum use, similar to the way things used to run on the old www.hunter--net.org site that I knew and loved and spent way too much time on.  I have like 95% of the original splats and sources books for reference but don't let that intimidate you, it can be broken down simply and in fact the less you know going in the better and more atmospheric the experience generally is.

In a nutshell the world sucks, it's run by monsters, vampires werewolves zombies ghosts and demons are all real but the average person doesn't know and can't see them.

Stuff is progressively getting fucked up worse and worse though there is a small percentage of people who CAN see what's really going on AND have the ability to fight back.  The fun twist is the more powerful these guys become the worse life gets for them.  Bwahahaha.

Tis excellent supernatural fun and NO the vampires don't sparkle.

If you're interested respond and I'll provide more info with the hope of getting this kickstarted soon, I hope to start this in a couple weeks (I already have a campaign in mind.)  Oh the fun.

I'm in. I'm playing a NWoD Hunter game IRL at the moment, so should be familiar with some stuff. On the other hand, the system differences will likely confuse me. Oh well.

Just curious, where would this game be set?

It isnt that much different. I have both books at home and its still based on the same principals. Different sects (and, of course different powers....no known valkyrie task force or those european lab guys as an official sect in this WoD) are really the only difference.

Outlaw, you know I am down.

And no, I wont be wayward. lol

also, as Outlaw said, the less you know, the more fucking scary and gritty the WoD is. These creatures aren't just your typical bad guys. Hunters regularly see things that would shatter a normal humans sanity.  It is not a place for the meek. Unless you like to be used as a mobile blood bank.

I haven't seen the NWOD Hunter at all so can't really make a comparison.

Fire, I knew you were down with it before I posted the thread  8)  Also I'm trying to get another one of the old Hunter--net players in on this as well (no not Knight).  We'll see how that goes.

Tomorrow I'll post a list of the different character types for those of you who don't know them.

Setting is going to be generic large city USA, your characters can live either in or near.  I normally use a fictitous city I created near Chicago but that's just because I'm from that area.  I'm open to input on that aspect.

I'd prefer to use brand new characters for this or very low level characters, if you have existing veteran characters you really want to use we can work them in as supporting characters with cameo type appearances but I want to avoid a lot of uber powered characters with armory (5) mixing with noobs, it just doesn't balance well.

If you've posted in this thread consider yourself signed up, feel free to post character concepts and we'll iron out details as we go.  More are welcome.

EDIT:  Character concepts that are "real life" are best suited to HtR.  Think more like pizza delivery guy or taxi cab driver than ex SEAL team merc.

Outlaw, I still have some of them on my contacts list on MSN messenger. If you need some email addresses, PM me. Hell, maybe I will stop being lazy and contact them myself...

Perhaps we could start in Chicago and allow our adventures to take us to Louisiana. Swamps are fucking creepy, I dont give a fuck what anyone says. Just a suggestion for future locations.

I will be posting my charcter either tonight or tomorrow morning. Looking forward to this. It has been too fucking long.

I'm really curious as to how this would work, and possibly the time frame that games would take place.

I'm really curious as to how this would work, and possibly the time frame that games would take place.

The time frame is like modern day. As in, it is probably happening right now as we speak. And that just adds to its awesome. This isnt a world where there is a different culture or different people. These things target the people we love and hate. They target the guy who installs your internet. They target the chairman of your credit union. They target the foreman of the construction company doing work down at 4th and Pacific.

Albeit, the "feel" of life is darker and more bleak, hence "World of Darkness". Poverty is more outstanding, crime is more rampant, homelessness is more widespread. Your friendly neighbor might not be so friendly because he doesnt trust you after that gang shooting killed one of your co-workers last week. People disappearing isnt as big a deal. Bank fraud and open embezzlement of money is almost regular practice.

Our world is slowly going down the toilet (especially with the Greece thing happening recently) but this world is already there. The only reason it hasnt fallen completely apart is because those shadows you think you see late at night after leaving work arent a product of your imagniation. Those youtube videos showing some outrageous shit some teen happened to catch on his iphone while walking home from school? Yeah, those werent edited (until *they* get ahold of the data...and the person responsible for releasing it). The media reporting a tragedy in which a massacre took place at a local school and then taking a commercial break only to return saying the report was a hoax and the perpetrators arrested? Surprise. Not a hoax.

Anyways, I could go on and on, but you probably get the idea.

Edit: Of course these games can take place in ANY time. On the old hunter--net there was an AWESOME game in the colonial America time period. Please note that while most Hunter games are played in modern times, hunters have been around for as long as civilised humanity. This isn't a new widely recognized phenomenon where all of a sudden a lot of humans can see the monsters for what they really are. At best, only a couple hundred people in the States have been given this power and most of them dont even know other people are out there who are like them. And sometimes that drives individual hunters insane. Im getting ahead of myself but yeah. Hunters arent an army. They are the cornered fox surrounded by hunting dogs, lashing out desperately to survive and escape.

Ah, an American setting. That should be refreshing. The game I'm in IRL is set in Swansea. Having a firearm is.... interesting, to say the least.

I'll probably be a few days at least before mine's up. A mate of mine has PDFs of pretty much every RP system ever, so I'm going to try and grab the relevant books from him.

I was wondering more along the lines if this would be a forum based RP, or something where we would need to use an outside mechanic or what have you. Also, I meant time that it would be played, not the time of the setting. I figured that would happen, haha.

Forum based, "rolls" will really only be done for critical tasks and I have a die roller website link laying around somewhere that actually verifies the rolls so everyone can check to make sure no funny business happened.

As far as time it would be played I'm not going to have set times, forum based games are hard to make work that way because of different time zones, etc.  The way I've done forum games I've ran in the past is to try not to progress past key points without input from everyone and then the game master resolving any actions.  White Wolf games lend themselves well to forum based gaming because they are more story and character driven rather than rolling die constantly.  As long as you don't try to god mod someone elses actions there's a lot of leeway for what you post.

I hope some of the makes sense.

EDIT: I'll post an example of a typical string of actions and resolution later.  It would be better than trying to explain it.

Fire, the only player I've really kept in contact with was Taj who RP'd Zeisha and Layla.  After some of the fallout from the last time Knight, Mish and Slipknot couldn't play nice with each other I pretty much got the cold shoulder from Mish and Slip.  Knight just doesn't seem to be on anymore.  If you still talk to Punisher see if he wants in.  Oh, and that old Japanese dude with the swords, I can't fricken remember who played his character or what his name was.

Would we have to use this? I can understand if you say yes, I just greatly prefer rolling physical dice.

I have a handful. I dont remember who they played. I do have Taj and I have Punisher too but I am not sure if he gets on anymore. Mish was a bitch anyways. Slipknot was a sycophant. Fuck them. Frankly, they were the ones who created the god characters I didnt like.

Ill do what I can.

I didn't say I was heart broken I lost touch with them  (http://www.thezombiehunters.com/forum/Smileys/default/evil.gif)

As far as the dice roller goes we can start off without it and see how it goes but I'm naturally suspicous of people who always make amazing rolls, I'm cynical like that  :P

took me like an hour to make that crappy character sheet. I posted all the backgrounds and all of the talents, knowledges and skills but the rest of you dont have to. I just threw them in so youd know. The only thing I didnt post all of were edges because thatd be really long and tedious. If you do not have access to a list of edges for your creed (or any others youre thinking about obtaining), feel free to PM me.

Edit: And there is usually a background story and history and all that stuff as well but I am burnt out and hungry so I will not post mine until Outlaw asks of it. My nom de guerre "euthanist231" is merely the online tag that he uses when frequenting hunter--net. For obvious reasons, it wont be used much (as this isnt hunter--net) but it was something I threw in to strengthen my slowly developing persona for Carl. There is my paper character, though.

Edit to edit: Also nature/demeanor/concept obviously have a lot more options rather than just bon vivant, survivor and "aging philosopher". I left these out intentionally so those of you who didnt have access to books would come up with something creative and not be a lazy fuck like me and use the archetypes in the book. However, I understand that creativity isn't a boon granted to everyone (myself included) so if you need a list of archetypes, PM me and I will give that to you as well. "Nature" is your true personality. 'Demeanor" is the personality you show to the world. "Concept" is a rough idea of what your character is in the WoD. Mine is aging philosopher but someone elses could be "paranoid detective", "inquisitive reporter", "bumbling taxi driver" or the like.

So the simple overview of the Hunters (or Imbued as the game refers to them).

They fall into three basic classes based on what the game calls Virtues:

Mercy  has three classes associated with it.

Redeemers, Martyrs and Innocents.  In broad terms these are the more peaceful Hunters who try to reconcile things with their enemies over actually fighting them.

Zeal

The three zeal classes are:

Avengers, Judges, Defenders.  These guys are much more action orientated and are more likely to kick ass than make friends.

Next up are the Vision based classes.

Visionaries, Hermits and Waywards.  Vision creeds are more about planning, psychic powers and communication.  Wayward and Hermits are also called the "LOST"creeds.  They are difficult to play as due to the fact that they start out with derangements from day one.

What’s a derangement?  In a nutshell Hunters are channeling powers not really meant for humans to use and as they get more powerful they start to crack.  I’ll finish up this post with my old Hunter character Zealot’s character sheet.  He’s been around a while and as such has a pretty full deck of crazy going on.

Whatever life the hunter who calls himself the Zealot may have had before he was imbued is gone. It has been closed off from his current life so completely it may as well have never existed. The most anyone else has been able to gather is that he was in fact happy at some earlier point in his life. That's an almost unbelievable contrast to the bitter, cheerless man that exists now.

He had lived with his long time girlfriend Katherine Donovan in a nice, upscale apartment. She was pregnant with their first child and he was planning on picking out an engagement ring any day. That is until she unfortunately turned up dead in their apartment.  He never showed up for work the day her body was found. Police who responded to a neighbors 911 call were quoted as saying, "It was unbelievable, the sheer amount of blood I mean. Enough for at least two, probably three bodies. It was like a slaughterhouse. The only body we ever found though was the girl." He was immediately taken into custody for questioning. Somehow he managed to overpower and disarm the three arresting officers and fled custody. At this time his status was upgraded to armed and presumed dangerous.

He vanished for a period of weeks, suddenly appearing in connection to an FBI arms smuggling investigation. Before agents could move to apprehend him an office building was destroyed in a horrific display of domestic terrorism. He was quickly declared the primary and indeed the sole suspect in this incident and has shot up to most wanted status. FBI profilers who uncovered one of his safe houses have declared him to be "dangerously unbalanced, quite possibly in the same magnitude as Manson or Gacy. The torture rooom he had set up was just sick, it looks like he worked some poor guy over for weeks, keeping him alive the whole time." The most shocking aspect of the bombing is the amazingly low casualty count. By official count only a handful of people were wounded. This is in direct contradiction to earlier, unconfirmed reports of "scores of bodies being pulled from the wreckage." Early film footage of rescue efforts has since become unavailable for review.

The suspect is 5'11", 190 pounds, with an athletic build, dark brown hair, green eyes. He is not known to use his real name or any other alias than “the Zealot” or simply “Zealot.” He is to be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Approach with extreme caution and DO NOT approach alone. Current whereabouts are unknown. Rumored to have fled the midwest. Unconfirmed sightings in the New England area.

So here's my general plan for running this.

Here's a semi detailed description of the setting and city that the characters are going to start out in.  The game will start there but there are no specific constraints on it having to remain there.

Brookvale Illinois is a small city about an hour west of Chicago.  Being near a waterway it started out as a trading outpost called Beaver Creek back in the days of the French exploration .  As people arrived and it expanded it displaced the local people.  One of the earliest incarnations of the town was almost entirely wiped out during a spate of skirmishes with the Indians they were displacing.  Local legend has it that around this time the town was rebuilt over an Indian burial ground.  The town quickly expanded as Illinois became a state.  Prior to the Civil War a family called Brookhurst came to prominence in the town and became influential in it's further expansion and development.  The name was changed to Brookhurst Vale.  The industrial revolution came and with it one of the towns first memorable disasters.  In 1850 the foundry burned down, trapping every worker inside.  The exact cause of the fire was never determined.  By the turn of the century the town had grown to a city.  In 1927 Marcus Brookhurst, the last patriarch of the Brookhusrt family, died in a horrific multiple murder/suicide that scandalized the nation.  The city changed its name to Brookvale in an effort to distance itself from the event and the Brookhurst Manor has remained empty, though maintained as a historical landmark to this day.  It quickly gained a reputation for being haunted and Marcus Brookhurst is remembered in local lore as a boogeyman used to scare children.  The summer of 1941 is remembered for being the year of the prison riot.  The old prison, which had been built before the Civil War, was overcrowded and infamous for mistreatment of its prisoners.  Trevor Moorehouse, a man who was widely believed to be innocent of the murders he was accused of was executed, the same night the riot began and before it was over at least 60 inmates and 35 guards were dead.  The surviving inmates were never readmitted to the general population of any prison, instead being transferred to the nearby Edgewood Sanitarium.  The prison was condemned and torn down in the late 70s but not before a number of suicides occurred there.  Rumors abounded that before its destruction the abandoned prison was the site of a devil-worshipping cult.  A new prison was constructed just after the end of World War 2 on the opposite side of town and remains in active use.  Edgewood Sanitarium sits across from it, vacant for decades and condemned.  The last patients Edgewood had seen were the prisoners transferred there after the riot.  Within months all of them and the staff at the mental hospital were dead.  Brutal murders, violent and bizarre accidents and suicide claimed them all.  Nathaniel Brookhurst High School, built just after the turn of the century, was the site of a tragic accident when the stage collapsed during a school play in 1988.  Six students, two faculty and five parents died.  Rumors of the collapse not being an accident circulated following the suicide of one of the stage assistants, Marsha Bradley, the following day.  Students still claim that the school is haunted by her spirit and those of her victims.

That’s the backstory of the city, everything mentioned above is common knowledge to those who live there.  (For example your characters).  Every city has its odd events and scary stories and for over 200 years this is a sampling of the one for Brookvale that were momentous enough for everyone to know about.  When the game starts characters will be able to explore Brookvale and once imbued, surf hunter-net.org.

What is hunter-net.org?  hunter-net.org was the online resource hunters could turn to for support from other hunters or to just talk and swap info.  For the purposes of this game it will be a thread separate from the game thread where you can post in character.  Obviously your character can only post to the hunter-net.org thread if they have webernet access.  Everyone on hunter-net.org uses an alias (much like a forum, omg.) and that alias gets appended with a user number when they first access the board.  For example, my old character Zealot was Zealot1206 on hunter-net.  Another character I had was Tormented13.  Tormented had joined way before Zealot, thus the lower number.

I’m still trying to find the other half of my books, I’ll post more later.

You can download character sheet PDF files from White Wolf, this is the link for the oWoD Hunter sheet.

Unfortunately it's not one of the cool ones you can edit and save but it's a good reference for homebrewing your own electronic copy and it works great if you want a hard copy.  I've found MOST of my books, still missing a few creed specific splats but I should be able to track them down this week.  If anyone has questions about creating their character let me know either here or by PM.

EDIT:  My goal is to start this game by the end of next week.  I'd like to have character sheets in by sometime this weekend or early next week so I can be prepared to do that.  If someone wants to join after that point it shouldn't be a problem, just be aware that there will be some lag time while I review the character and work in a story hook for them to join with.  I don't plan on having more than 8 active players at any 1 time because in my experience anything beyond that point becomes very unwieldly, ideal forum RP size seems to usually be between 3 and 5 not including the story teller.  If anyone has any questions or comments let me know.

EDITING OF THE EDIT:  http://mrgone.rocksolidshells.com/hunter.html  Very kickass character sheet PDF, link courtesy of Greg.  If you want to edit them and save the changes use either Adobe PRO or download Foxit from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ for free.  I haven't had the chance to mess with FOXIT myself but I'm told it works.

So here are the basics for character creation.

Step 1  Pick your concept, creed, nature and demeanor.

Fire covered these pretty well earlier but I'll recap.  Concept is the characters overall theme.  Examples are streetwise punk, homeless guy, divorced mom, serial killer.  The options are endless.  Creeds have already been loosely discussed for more info feel free to ask or even google the white wolf wiki.  Nature and demeanor are like Firesolved already said, nature is who your character really is.  For example Zealot is a rogue by nature meaning he's looking out for himself above all else and gains conviction by furthering his own agenda.  Rebel is his demeanor, its the face he puts on and what most people perceive him as.  The editable PDFs I linked to earlier have every White Wolf nature/demeanor already loaded in drop down boxes.  Most are pretty self explanatory and you can make up your own if you want.

Step 2.  Choose attributes.

Every attribute gets 1 dot filled in automatically.  You then have 6, 4, and 3 points to spread across each category, Physical, Mental and Social.  Just pick which category gets which priority.    (You know you want to build a socially inept tank :p)

Step 3.  Abilities

No ability goes higher than 3 at this point and these do NOT get one free dot to start with.  Spread your points out 11, 7 and 4 to Talents, Skills, Knowledges in any priority you prefer.

Step 4  Advantages.

You can spend 5 points in backgrounds and spend your 3 starting virtue points (edges).  I personally would prefer that no character starts with arsenal greater than 1 and even then I’d like to talk about why they have a gun in the first place.  I played a campaign once where the story teller let a starting character begin with arsenal 5 and the whole thing became roll dice to shoot stuff which isn’t all that much fun.    Again, the Mr. Gone PDFs are great because all of the backgrounds and edges are in the drop down boxes.

Step 5.  Finish up.

Mark your starting conviction (according to creed, everyone starts with 3 except avengers, martyrs and waywards start with 4)

Spend your freebie points.  You get 21 points to spend at this point with the following restrictions.

You can’t raise conviction over 8 points.
You can’t buy edges or virtue with freebie points.

Freebie point breakdown is as follows.
Attributes 1 dot = 5 free points
Abilities 1 dot = 2 points
Backgrounds, willpower, conviction 1 dot = 1 point

I’d prefer backgrounds or abilities not be raised above 3 dots without talking about it first, other than that go nuts.

Between this and the PDF character sheets you should be good to go, if you have any questions on specifics let me know.

Brandon just turned 18 and should be in the middle of his senior year of high school right now.  Instead he’s recently dropped out and decided he’s going after his dream of making it big with his band; DeathWish.  They’ve been doing well lately, getting a nice following in the local club scene and he’s made enough to get a small apartment in a not completely shitty part of town and a decent motorcycle.  He has a guitar, a place of his own and hangs out in clubs all night getting hit on by hot chicks, he figures life is about as good as it’s ever going to get.  At least it’s better than his past.

Brandon grew up in a decent suburb of Brookvale, his parents had money and belonged to the right social circles, the fact that Brandon was constantly in trouble was the only thing that held them back, or so they always told him.  Brandon had never felt very close to them anyway, in fact more often than not he wasn’t home; instead he spent his time downtown hanging out with “bad influences.”  In the last few years Brandon has become an accomplished petty thief and if he had to he could make a living just through that.  He’s seen both sides of the tracks and believes that people are equally likely to be “good” or “bad” regardless of where they’re from or what their background is.  In fact his moral compass has been floating in a sea of gray itself lately.  Generally speaking he believes people are more good than evil but he’s seen his share of evil as well.

Brandon has always had a morbid fascination with death and the afterlife.  His mother tells him it’s because he watches so much of that “trash” (horror movies) but Brandon knows better, he knows it’s because there really is an unexplainable side of the world.  He had grown up not far from the old abandoned Brookhurst Manor and from an early age had seen the unexplainable there more than once, culminating in an ill advised adventure where he spent the night there during the summer after his eighth grade in school.  He never told anyone what he had experienced there that night but it further fueled his interest in the “unexplained.”  But it was around this time that the premature streak of gray in his hair first appeared as well as his chronic nightmare problem.  Brandon is naturally intelligent and inquisitive but isn’t much for book learning.

Time to post your sheets and backstory.

Questions:

What are triggers?
What should I put down for Virtues?

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: TheLastOutlaw on March 18, 2010, 07:19:48 pm
Triggers are optional details you can add that describe what action or method your character uses to activate an edge.  Virtue is the path your character follows, Mercy, Vision or Zeal.  Characters start with 3 virtue and usually use them to buy their level 1 and level 2 edges.  Your first 3 virtue points are always keyed to your creed but you can earn virtue in other paths dependant upon your characters actions.  All of the edges are creed specific and are listed in the Mr Gone PDFs. If you need details on what the edges do let me know.

How about Mercy, Conviction, and Willpower?

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: TheLastOutlaw on March 19, 2010, 06:20:32 am
Mercy is one of the virtues, my character is an Innocent which is one of the three Mercy creeds.  If you had an Avenger your virtue would be Zeal instead.  Every charcter starts with three virtue based on their creed.  If you want more info on the Creeds and Virtues White Wolf has a decent wiki here http://whitewolf.wikia.com/wiki/Hunter:_The_Reckoning

Conviction and willpower are a little more complex but in a nutshell it's how you use your abilities and "level up".  If you can gain 10 conviction you can cash them in and get another virtue point which can then be spent on more "edges" (which are your cool powers.)  Edges come in level, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and you can't buy a higher level edge until you have the preceding level.  In other words you have to buy 1 before you buy 2 and so on regardless of how much virtue you have.  I'll give you more detail later when I get home and get to my books.

Progress check.

Out of the people who posted that they were interested we currently have...

TheLastOutlaw:  Character sheet and backstory.

Firesolved:  Character sheet, backstory in progress.

Cheez:  Getting a copy of the rules to work on his character sheet.

Raryn:  Getting a copy of the rules to work on his character sheet.

Cricco:  No update.

Log: No update.

Helmi:  No update.

This is as much for my reference as anything.  It appears we're on track to start next weekend provided I get some more backstory info in but even that seems to be on track.  Have fun =)

I'm totally going to play an ex Seal Delta Swat Force Recon Mercenary Army Navy Leet Snypar/CSI/Detictive/Spy.  :D

Just Kidding... In actuality I think I'll be playing a 14 year old runaway Innocent or Defender.  Probably will be very new to the area since runaways usually don't go uncaught for very long close to home.  Let me know if this concept is acceptable in your game and I'll provide more details and a character sheet, Outlaw.

Just FYI, starting character sheets will be public knowledge, backstory doesn't have to be.

If you feel like playing things close to the chest just post a brief description of a couple of paragraphs, the level of detail that someone would know having grown up near your or if you're from out of town what they would learn having spent a few hours with you.  I'll ask for more info by PM if I need it.

Description and common mannerisms/behaviors - Truant is about 5 and a half feet tall and weighs in at around 150 pounds.  He is a slightly well built white kid, but his facial features are very typical and unremarkable.  He appears to be quite young, no older than sixteen and most likely a few years younger.  He generally wears cargo pants and a canvas O.D. green trench coat with a T-Shirt on underneath.  He has blue eyes, and if you're around him for more than a few weeks you will note that he attempts to change his appearance very frequently by altering his hair style, color, etc. When on a hunt, Truant is very intense, alert, and perceptive.  Many people dismiss him as "just a kid" and end up owing him an apology as well as their lives when things go south.  When there is nothing noteworthy or interesting happening Truant will have his ears plugged up with an iPod and be buried in a book or his PSP.  He will write in his journal daily, and sometimes you will catch him singing to himself (poorly) while sketching out manga-style comics.

Background - Truant is generally fairly quiet about his background, but it is very obvious that he is a runaway and carries much baggage. After a very short period of time in Truant's company you will learn that he is being actively tracked by authorities, and he takes many precautions to ensure he remains uncaught.  This could be dismissed simply because he is obviously a runaway, but if you spend time thinking about it you have never seen his face on the news, on a poster, on a milk carton, etc. Nor have you heard his description on the radio or seen a news bulletin.  Once your character puts 2 and 2 together, he or she will realize that Truant is likely wanted for far more than simply running away from home.  He is protective and concerned with the safety and well-being of innocents, but when children become involved he can become downright reckless in his attempts to defend them from the darkness.  Truant will generally be very vague when asked for details of his "old life", but you can gather that he grew up in a smaller Midwestern city.  His favorite pastimes in the old life included hunting, fishing, paintball, and airsoft; these things have given him an edge when it comes to grinding it out and staying alive, as well as helping him be a quite formidable hunter.  You get the impression that Truant has been imbued and aware of monsters in the world for a long period of time, but has only actively been a Hunter for less than 6 months.

*This flaw is listed as 3 points due to an alteration by the ST.

Raryns character sheet is almost done, he has a few more freebie points to use and that's about it as well as sending his backstory.  Fire I still need you characters backstory as well.

Unless your backstory states explicity that you've already been imbued your imbuing will take place in game.

Cricco has said he won't be joining us, Cheez is still working on his character due to being busy in real life, it won't be a problem to work him in and in fact I'll leave openings for anyone else who wants to drop in later.

Really tempted to play, but I haven't played an actual RP game in over a year and I haven't played OWoD in probably 4 years or longer. I went and pulled my V:tM off the shelf, kind of jogged my memory a bit, but I never played in a hunter game (as a Hunter) before so I don't know any of their abilities at all. I'll probably be trolling yall's game and jump in on the next one if possible. :P

Max, it's not that tough.  If you really are interested, I'll help you out.  I have PDF copies of all the books and can answer quite a few questions if you have 'em.  The cool thing about online RPs is that you don't need to so much know the mechanic as have the time to check the board every day.

Post by: Firesolved on March 25, 2010, 08:59:11 am
Goddamn it. Ok today I post Carls history. I am sorry for being so sluggish dude.

Alright here goes *deep breath*:

*A TV sits in a dank basement; The fuzzy static on the TV is almost as hypnotizing as the steady white noise being issued from the device. The TV itself is a model of old times. A fine coat of dust decorates the crevices and flat surfaces. Slowly, the static fades and a vaguely human figure can be made out. He must be wearing dark clothes because you can only make out his silhouette, and even then just barely. The figure looks to both sides, giving the viewer an outline of the figures sharp nose before facing towards you. He begins to speak..

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I currently do not have the time or date. Frankly, where I am, it doesn't much matter.

The voice that is emitted sounds like it could be a parody of a 1950's commercial announcer.

I don't have much time. Before I am lost, I must let someone...ANYONE know who I am.

With a deep inhalation, the man sniffles, wipes his nose and continues.

I am Carl Hausway. I was born on August 25th, 1955. Raised in Bristol, Vermont by one Pattie Threndel and Johan Hausway. Dear old mom and pop. Now they're dead and gone. Raised me good enough, I suppose. Breezed through school. Didn't play much with the other kids. Didn't have enough time. Always studying. Reading. Learning.

He takes a moment to hold back the flood of memories. He sniffles again and wipes at his nose.

I graduated from college on May 19th, 1976. My thesis paper was a hit. A masterpiece they said. The new "modern standpoint of practical philosophy". Of course it was just a bunch of hyped up gibber-jab. Those people were children when it came down to it. I was the intellectual giant. I stormed the philosophy branch of every college on the east coast. It was a GODDAMN HONOR to have published Carl Hausway. It was a GODDAMN HONOR to have Carl Hausway give a presentation at your college. And then 1994 came. I had just given a nice oratory spill on the dealings of Epictetus and Viktor Frankl. Just leaving a typical after-presentation dinner party. Sure, I had had some wine. Some shots. I had even done a line of cocaine in the bathroom. I needed it. My nerves were everywhere. The people in the ballroom generally talked about how wonderful I was. How great a philosopher I was...

He sniffles again and you hear him cracking his knuckles. His voice grows bitter.

What a great fucking example I set. This time? I heard the growing seed of doubt and dissension. These people didn't understand me. This is 1994. The age of Clinton and United States supremacy across the globe. No one had time for a small town born philosopher. This wasn't a time of practical solutions. It was a time of idealism. Idealism of supremacy. I can assure you, this wasn't just a vice suffered by the world of academia. No, no. It permeated the world of politics as well. So much that the events of 9/11 could happen. 1994. Back to leaving the dinner party. My head. It feels weird. Not like the weird, pinching feeling I usually got after drinking too much or doing a little bit of cocaine. No. This felt like an overwhelming pressure. Like my mind was trying to birth a memory too big for my mind to handle. I sank to my knees. In that alleyway. Chicago. My head against the wall. It hurts so much.

He bends at the waste holding his head. His hands are clutching at his head and you can imagine him trying to pull his hair out.

The vision came to me. It felt so natural and so....these things I wasn't supposed to be privy to. I saw a man. A colleague. Mr. Adam Walton. Walking across the street. Lights come from his left and I can imagine it a car. I look deeper and see a figure painted by the light. At first I think it is my drug addled mind playing tricks on me, because this figure can't be what it looks to be. I only see it for a couple of seconds, five seconds maximum. Even then, its appearance makes me question my line of philosophy. The same line I've had for more than 20 years. The creature appeared to be a giant humanoid. I could make out the claws that shouldn't have been at the end of its hands. I could see the tufts of wild hair poking out from its mane. I could see the refelection of light in its shimmering fangs.

He stands up and puts a hand on his heart.

By the time the car passed, Dr. Adam Walton was gone. I never saw him again. I could've looked for him. Could've went to the authorities with what I saw when the search for him went up. But here I am. Carl Hausway, known drug abuser, antiquated philosophy major. A relic from the age past. Yeah I could've went to them, but I didn't. Because I value not being locked up. And the thrill of not telling was the most illicit thing I have ever experienced. Since then, my minds eye has seen crimes over and over again. I mainly ignore them. The last city I remember clearly was Brookvale. It was the dawn of a new year. 2010. Had I worked at some community college?

He scratches his head. He appears to be genuinely puzzled.

I think so. Scraping by on the bare minimum. there was a gun involved in my little mishap. I think I saw into the soul of one of those creatures. And it may or may not have turned out to be a fellow professor. Math.

He scoffs.

Never did like math anyways. The gun went off. 8 times. The vision is hazy. Newspaper articles everywhere the next day. "Disgruntled, philosophy professor shoots up school". Disgruntled? Yes. Shoots up school? Only in 2010 would shooting one man be doctored up to be a massacre. These goddamn kids.

He looks to his left and scratches his head hurriedly.

Well, audience. My time is up. Time is always up. Always. I always wanted to say this. The truth is out there!

That last bit is ended with wild cackling and the screen fades to static, then slowly fades to darkness...*

Ask Outlaw. He has logs from the website and I am sure he could hookyou up with the name of your original character. As funny as that sounds.

And yeah Cheez, ask away and I will explain or flounder helplessly until Outlaw comes in with his army of knowledge and shit.

Helmi, I do have an archive I made of most of h--net's old posts before the server move, I should have your old characters name, I'll look when I get back from work and PM you.

Cheez, if you have any great doubts about the way edges work let me know but I'll break it as basically as I can in the meantime.  Each edge is keyed to a virtue.  Either zeal, mercy or vision.  Normally a specific creed has it though there is a lot cross seeding possible.  So...  you have to have enough of the virtue to "buy" the edges.

Typically it will look something like this...

An avenger has a level 1 edge, in this case cleave.  His level two edge is muse of flame.  Level 1 + level 2 edge means he needs to have a total of 3 virtue available.  If he wants to use a level 3 edge he has to have a total of SIX zeal available, the original 3 plus the 3 for the new edge.

Edges are used similar to a spell in that you have to activate it and you have resources available to do so, for Hunter that resource is conviction.

If I recall correctly... my old character was named "Helmi" which makes for an incredibly lame, and confusing re-introduction on hunter-net.  I might just change his handle i/c xP.

Not sure if you read it or not Outlaw (and other valued players/spectators), but I posted my backstory on the previous page. Excuse the odd layout. I just wanted to throw in a bunch of shit that felt off. That way the reader got a feeling of what it feels to be around Carl.

His character name would be useful... I can't remember if he ever used a name other than "Helmi"

http://i41.tinypic.com/242aaly.jpg (http://i41.tinypic.com/242aaly.jpg)
Current conviction: 3

I've not written it yet, but I was thinking that for her backstory, either A. Her daughter was killed during the event that got her imbued or B. social services took said daughter away after her imbuement because it looked like she'd gone crazy. Because of this, she's out for undead blood. Sound good?

EDIT- OK, that's bigger on screen than it was in Paint. Linked instead of displayed as an image.

EDIT 2- Appearance and backstory

Description:
Age: 28
Height: 5'3
Physique: Average
Appearance: Mary has a slightly pale, freckled complexion, brown eyes and mid-back length red hair, usually tied back in a ponytail. She usually wears off-brand trainers, jeans and Tshirts when not in her work uniform. During cold weather, she also wears an m1942 US army overcoat, originally her grandfather's.

Mary O'Sullivan is one of the horde of working class Irish-Americans scattered across the US. She's lived in Brookvale for about ten years now, being originally from Chicago. Her story is a typical one- she moved away from home after graduating from high school, got a job as a waitress to pay for a college course and never quite made it, instead staying in the diner for the next decade. If it weren't for the events of just over a month ago, she probably would have stayed there until retirement, bringing up her daughter Katheryn as best she could. Raising her alone (the father having just been a one night fling with unforeseen consequences) in a fairly rough neighbourhood was a challenge, but she coped.
The predictable familiarity of her life was shattered one evening, in mid January of this year. It had been a long day at work, and she was exhausted. Her feet and head aching from serving tables all day, Mary decided to take a bus home rather than walk as usual.
She waited at the bus stop for several minutes. Accompanying her were several youths and a middle aged man in a fairly decent suit. After five minutes or so of shivering and waiting for the bus, the scene changed. Everything felt somehow... wrong... Mary looked up. The first thing she noticed was the bus timetable- gone were the route codes and times, in their place a stark message- STOP THEM. The next thing she noticed was the guy in the suit. Where there had previously been a slightly overweight businessman type with thinning hair, there was now a decaying thing, hideous to behold. It noticed her staring at it. Looking at her with milky white eyes, it opened its mouth. Before the monstrosity could do or say whatever it planned to, Mary attacked. She had no weapons to bear, but in that moment it didn't matter. She had to choose between fight and flight, and her choice was clear. There are some things that simply must not be.

She got in one punch, then the youths were upon her, grabbing her arms and pulling her away. They did not comprehend. All they saw was some crazy woman flipping out and attacking an innocent man. The thing managed to get away in the confusion as passersby saw what was going on and tried to help.
Mary spent a night in the police station. Telling the cops what she saw didn't help at all. All it did was make them want to test for drugs. Of course none were found, but her mental stability was still questioned. Still, she was released and went home. Over the next few days, she prepared for the worst- her uncle, a retired Chicago PD beat cop, had insisted she take a few items from his firearm collection when he learned where she was moving to. She hadn't touched them once since moving in (except for one occasion when she thought she heard someone breaking in), but now she re-acquainted herself with them. How could she not, knowing what she now knew? She had no idea how good a gun would be against those things, but even the slightest advantage would help immeasurably.
Meanwhile, her friends and coworkers were getting worried- ever since her 'nervous breakdown' her behaviour had been strange and erratic. She was acting paranoid, avoiding people and places she had once frequented, often going to strange places and frequently turning up late to work looking like she hadn't slept. As well as concern for her, people worried for poor little Kathy- her mother surely wasn't being a good influence, and some even said the child might be in danger around her. A report was sent to Social Services explaining people's suspicions. A couple of weeks later, far faster than would normally be expected, an HHS agent knocked on her apartment door, backed up by a pair of cops. Mary argued and pleaded, but to no avail. They took her daughter. As they were leaving, Mary had a sudden flash of vision- only one of the people who took Kathy was actually human. The other two were rotting horrors, just like the man at the bus station. She ran at them screaming, but they were in a car and driving away before she could reach them. They had stolen her daughter. She had failed to stop them, failed to protect the most important thing in her life. Now there was no point in living. After a couple of days of hysterics and a failed suicide attempt, Mary vowed to get her revenge on these monstrosities. She realised she had been mistaken- there was still a reason for her to keep on living. Even if it killed her, she would track down and rescue her daughter if at all possible, and if not then rid the world of as many of those hellish creatures as she could.

NOTE- I was aiming for the American equivalent of the DSS. I think the HHS is right. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

Alex is a rather dull looking character. A normal complexion, shoulder length brown hair, and dull green eyes. He stands just over six feet and weighs a light 185 lbs. He is normally seen wearing a pair of dark blue jeans, a gray dress shirt, a pair of old tennis shoes and a dirty white doctor's coat.

Alex grew up in a small town in the country. But he always knew that he wanted to be a doctor. He worked hard and managed to make it into a university that had a well known medical program. After graduating from university, he joined on as an assistant doctor at a hospital in Brookvale. It was at this time that he realized that there was something going on in the world that was not known to the general public. People started coming in with horrible diseases and illnesses. Alex's career as a licensed medical practitioner came to an end in a series of patients of horrible attacks. He was placed in charge of their treatment when he finally got a good look at what he had been figuring out. The patients were the victims of supernatural forces, nothing he did had any effect on their health and the patients slipped further and further away. He came to the attention of the hospitals director and the police when the patients began to die off. Alex lost his doctor's license and was placed under arrest for medical murder. The police were unable to find any evidence of the charges and he was released from jail, without having his license renewed. He turned to alcohol to cope with his loss, but he knew at some reach of his mind that he had been thrown into a world that he could never return from.

Cheez your character looks epic.  I think we have a really good group here.

As far as whether or not her kid dies in her imbuing or gets taken away after is completely your call, both are excellent story hooks though the losing later would take more build up.  I would probably prefer the losing afterward but as I said, totally your call.

Sorry if I missed it, but what time of year will we be starting in? A specific month would be great, but even just a season would do. Y'see, I'm planning on having Mary's imbuement to have happened about a month before the game starts. Writing her backstory at the moment and want to have a few nice details.

Cheers. Background's almost done now, just one more question- I got the impression from reading some of the edges that the Imbued can't see the undead all the time, they have to use an edge to see the truth. That correct, or am I reading things that aren't there?

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: TheLastOutlaw on March 26, 2010, 07:44:50 pm
It's not an edge but you're correct, conviction must be spent to activate second sight.

I apologize for not starting the game thread today but unforseen circumstance and extreme drunkeness prevented it.

I'm not going to play, but I do have a question if you will answer it for me (which is a lame question)

So, in this RP like game, you not only do posts on the "internet" but you also do real like RP stuffs too?  (If I am ready it correctly)

If I am, then this is epic. And I want to see how it folds out.

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)

I think that's how it works too. They have 2 threads, one which is the hunter site, and one of stuff that's happening.

I agree this is epic, it's a badass plot device to feed NPC stuff through. I want mooooore stuff to read :D

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: Helmi_17 on March 27, 2010, 08:12:09 pm
Haha, yes.  In Hunter: The Reckoning, there is an in game website called hunter-net that the player characters (usually) find and use.  What you see happening in this hunter-net thread is some former characters that all knew each other (a few of us here have played together on a different site before) and eventually you'll likely see our new characters there too, as well as NPCs.

As far as getting more to read... Well, forum games can tend to take some time to unfold because of real life... BUT, since it's a play by post sort of thing you will usually get a lot more insight to the characters and what exactly is happening because you post your characters actions and words as if you're simply writing your part of a story as opposed to just having some IC dialogue and basic actions such as an in-person RPG.

Hope all of that made sense, and that you guys enjoy.

Post by: TheLastOutlaw on March 27, 2010, 08:15:18 pm
I couldn't have said it better myself.

But yea, two threads, one is the "internet" and one is the game.  It's hard to describe beyond that but you'll see how it works out (or doesn't) as the game unfolds.

Time frames for posting are really difficult to enforce on the internet given that everyone is in drastically different time zones.  I will make sure that critical story moments aren't resolved until everyone has input.

NINJA'D!

The key is all that is in the envelope, it has a box number stamped on it, that's it.

There should be a button at the top of the page that says 'Notify' and I think that'll shoot you an e-mail when someone posts in the thread(not entirely sure because I've never used it before). If you have your iphone setup to alert you to new e-mails though that pretty much works the same...kou could even get a bit fancier I think and set up a seperate e-mail if you wanted just for game updates...kind of a hassle though. Personally I'd just set a bookmark to the page or something and make a mental note to just refresh every now and then. :P

To be honest, Raryn, there are a lot of posts but not a lot has really happened that your character would even be aware of.  So as a player, you should read it... But if you were to only read up to the part where everyone left the diner, and then post as if you've returned... Your character would be about 5-15 minutes late.  Basically all you've missed out on is some character exposition, with is important, fun, and i reccommend you read it... But in order to post you don't have to do much more than skim it.

As of my last post:  Mary, Zach, and Brandon are sitting at a table in the diner just chat chitting.  Everyone is looking a little weathered, and as of the last 2 posts, the conversation has been pushed into "completely plot irrelevant" territory... Although I'm sure it's super therapeutic for the characters.

I'd prefer not to go over five active players at one time, beyond that forum games quickly become cumbersome and hard to run.  Unless BB decides he doesn't want in or we lose an active player we're already at five but make a character sheet anyway, if things run smooth enough with five I'll see about working you in later.

It's lambing season and me and two others are in charge for the night and each of us checks the animals and then have a bit over 2 hours break before going once more(repeat).
I'll be staying up the entire night with access to internet so I'll make a character.
I'm quite eager to do some RP as I've been in a bad mood recently.

Sounds good.

There is a RISK, however, that my character will have some slightly disturbed traits, as my streak of clumsiness today have put me in a bad mood...
Why do I write this?
By doing so I avoid having Jason's unknown brother being a character  :P

Edit: I'm working on the character now, but I'm a tiny bit confused.
First of all, I have no knowledge of any of the "edges" and second, many fields in abilities go quite blank.
And I don't know what many of the tributes do(expression, occult, politics). Are those supposed to have "points" at all?
Its a bit confusing.

Edit 2: I ironically noticed the "freebie points" right after the first edit. But I'm still confused by some of the skills, knowledges etc.
And the types of "edges".

If you need a digital copy of the rulebooks, PM me and I will get you a link to download them. You can also ask Cheez or Raryn

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: BrainBlow on April 16, 2010, 10:56:32 pm
I really don't know much about the edges. I think my character will go incomplete without it...
Edit: Yeah, the sheet is pretty much Finished... but I haven't written in the "edges", since I dunno how they work and which does what.

Edit 2: I'm going to a hut with friends. Won't be able to surf the web before late on Sunday.
Just thought I'd tell since it looks like things go rather fast in this.

Wait, do you have to be a member on the hunter-net thing to play?

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: Helmi_17 on April 18, 2010, 03:16:38 pm
You will automatically get access to hunter-net once your character becomes awakened in game.  We'll explain it all to you as it becomes relevant.

In regards to some of your questions.  Yes, a lot of the skills will go without dots... All of the skills are listed on the character sheet, but your character will likely never have dots in quite a few of them.

Why don't you post up your character sheet so far for us, and a quick blurb about what kind of person he is... And we will make sure it's all attributed correctly and make some suggestions for you.

Post by: BrainBlow on April 18, 2010, 03:47:30 pm
Well I would post him, but... earlier I had an idea, but was like "nah". Then I read the players manual and... god damn, I want to have a wayward!
That would mean I'd have to re-write a little bit. But would it be okay at all with one?

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: Helmi_17 on April 18, 2010, 04:49:10 pm
Waywards are nuts...  I would wait for Outlaw to weigh in on it, but I'm pretty sure he'll let you play anything that isn't too broken.

I know they are nuts...
But calm nuts...
I like those  ;D
Now yes, I'm looking for outlaw's opinion. That is why I asked.

My character doesn't have an account there yet. It's basically like a common interest forum for Hunters. Absolutely no requirement to be on there, but your character will probably find it if they have a computer.

Helmi and Cheez are dead on regarding H--net.  Playing a wayward?  Challenging but doable.  Please catch me on MSN to discuss.  I'm hitting the hay (been up since 0330) but I'll be on tomorrow, my contact info is in my profile.

I'll try to do that. But I'm not sure when. I have a surprisingly tight schedule today. But I'll see what I can do.

Edit: I'll try to get on MSN today. I don't think there is anything to disturb me today.

In other news, I a have also found myself in a WoD werewolf campaign. I am a werebear, and last game I tore a werewolf in half, and used another one as a club for a good couple of rounds of combat. Good times.

Yo. I'm going to a re-enactment show at Margam Park this weekend. I'll be meeting my parents there and going back home with them for another event next weekend which is in my home town. During the week I'm staying with them, my internet access will either be nonexistent or severely limited, depending on whether or not I can find an ethernet cable. Auto Mary if needed.

Seriously though, the meeting in the diner pretty much did what it was going to accomplish, it's up to you guys to decide what your characters are going to do until the club scene Saturday night, or we could just jump forward to that if you wanted though I think most of you had plans for your characters in the interm.

Hello fellow Zombie Hunters; I am here to see if I can make a character and be a part of this. I've read most of the Hunter-net related stuff on this thread alone, but this is the first time I've ever heard of the Hunter story. It still sounds extremely awesome though. So, is there an okay time for me to join?

Yea... I haven't touched this recently for a few reasons, the player base seems to have vanished and I'm getting ready to leave for vacation.  I won't be back until after the 4th of July and I've been informed I'll be on special projects at work when I return so I really have no clue when this going to be revived which is a damn shame because I had some big plans for Brookvale.

I'm still interested in reading yall's tale for what it's worth. :P

I recently just started playing Hunters Hunted (http://whitewolf.wikia.com/wiki/The_Hunters_Hunted) for the first time ever, except our DM won't let us take the faith or magic-y stuff... >.>

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: TheLastOutlaw on July 19, 2010, 07:36:40 pm
Hunters Hunted is fun, it's HtR without the edges or sanity protection.  Most campaigns devolve into gibbering madmen much like a good round of Call of Cthulhu but without having to pronounce Nyarlothotep.

Title: Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD)
Post by: AmadeusMaxwell on July 19, 2010, 07:52:18 pm
So that's why 2 of our 4 players already have major derangements...I thought they just screwed up. Well, I guess they did just by making characters. :p

I kid, it is a lot of frustrating fun.

Hey TLO, I have a question. Whould it be ok if I brought in a charcter I have from another WoD RP as an NPC? I have plans for Alex that require him meeting...how to put it, a rightous creature of the otherworld. It's a werebear.

yay!

Going to read the thread first and I'm sure I have the book knocking somewhere about the house. I've never played Hunter, though. I bat for the other team. ...or one of the other teams? That analogy flopped.

Anyway, OWoD = good times.
