Bethany looked over to the one who had spoken to her, her eyes taking in his unkempt appearance and her lips formed into a frown. She wondered just how long these people had managed to defend themselves in this place, and what tragedies must have occurred amongst them. Well, she was here now, and the Lord must have known she would be needed, so she would do what she could to help these people...as long as their intentions were pure. The frown became a soft smile after a moment as the teacher replied gently, "Thank you, Leland, but we are alright. I've just put Anthony to bed; the boy needs his rest."

"Are you alright, Little Bear?" "I'm okay, Mama Betty. Where's Mr. Frank?" "Mr. Frank is sleeping right now, he was tired. It's bedtime for you, too." "Okay Mama. I love you." "I love you, too, Little Bear." Bethany leaned forward and kissed the forehead of little Anthony as the boy yawned and closed his eyes, quickly falling into a comfortabl slumber after the day's ordeals. Bethany quietly thanked the Lord for allowing the child to have a peaceful rest. Her own time for sleep would have to come later, however. She was curious as to the inhabitants of their new shelter. If there was any possibility of danger to her or her charge, she would know of it now, so she could make preparations to leave, or escape as the case may be.
After ensuring that the boy was tucked into the makeshift covers of her sweater and skirt, the woman rose and exited the room they were given, pulling the door in to close but leaving a crack open to allow what light, if any, there was to filter in. She then entered the common area, looking around to see which if their rescuers/captors were around. It was time to learn something about these people...

Ack, I did it again! Bad Xan! Very Bad Xan! We don't leave our RPs mid-stream! I'll be reading the backlog and see if there's someway I can salvage my role(s) here, because I was enjoying this immensely. Sorry everyone!

"Thank you so much little man, I really needed some H2O there. You're a lifesaver! Now get back on with your mama and stay close. Mr. Frank needs to go talk to the grown-ups ok?" Anthony took back the bottle, now topped, and moved as quickly as his little feet could carry him back to Mama Betty. "Thank you, Little Bear," he heard Mama say as she took the bottle from him, "you did a very good job." Anthony smiled toothily at her before hiding behind her skirt once more. Bethany straightened up just as she heard voices from the hallway. It seemed something else was going on outside. "Look, I know you probably aren't feeling that trusting after the way we burst in, but I want you to hear me out. We're staying in an old apartment out in the suburbs. Big place, a lot of empty rooms, and it's secure. You should come back with us. It's better defended than this place, we've got food and water and we could definitely fit in a few more people."Her heart leaped at what Liam was saying. To have a place among people once again, and perhaps even a friend for young Anthony, it was like a sign from the Lord himself. Or the devil, she quickly reminded herself, however, his tricks come in many forms, and his hand has been in play for some time now."That is a very generous offer, Liam," Bethany replied courteously, "but I'm sure you are aware that this is something we should discuss with each other, aren't you?"

I don't trust myself with puzzles, but that's not what I was referring to. I'm talking about some very real world circumstances that can be played up for dramatic tension. My friend, who picked up the game after I suffered DM fatigue that ended us in a boat, threw a monsoon at us. Some of the most involved gameplay that session was just trying to ride out the storm.

Thinking of throwing a non-combat encounter sort of thing at my friends. I find that unless I'm already well thought-out in what kind of combat they're going to be seeing, it just seems tacked on and boring. Maybe some skill rolling will be worthwhile, I know last session the DM made it work fantastically.
