PP: Tax season. We now bleed money.

PP2: Because of the delay with book 2, we'll be taxed for 2013 as if the preorder was just a huge profit, rather than a huge obligation to spend a shitpot of money. Taxes for 2014 will be much lower, sure... but Unc'a Sam wants his money now.

I meet with accountants in 12 hours to BEGIN seeing what the damage will be :p

Check out the Zombie Stuff forum- plenty of people discuss these sorts of things there Smiley

If I understand it right, and I may not, I don't think the at-fault party's insurance company is allowed to write off the victim's vehicle unless it's just flat out not repairable at all. So, hopefully things will work out for you!

Car accidents suck :/

hahaha! You guys are awesome.

We went and watched her get hitched. It was very sweet- she and her new hubby kept giggling all throughout their vows. At one point, they were just standing there staring into each others' eyes... to the point where the groom stopped repeating his lines and we all thought he'd lost the plot. They're an adorable couple together Smiley

Don't.  Mechanical parts break, and hard drives are 100% mechanical.  Using two hard drives actually doubles the chance of a failure.  And if one drive goes, there's a fair chance it'll take the rest of the system with it.

Use a flash drive; they're solid state and have no moving parts.  Then find a cloud solution like Google Drive and let them manage the redundant hard drive solution.  Work-system + flash drive + cloud = reasonably secure backup solution.

That wouldn't be sufficient to our needs, I'm afraid. SSDs are expensive, and best used for fast drive access. The workstations do run off of those for their daily operations, but that's not the sort of ability that a storage server needs. Graphic design work involves throwing around a *lot* of data, which means that platter drives are the economical solution. SSDs simply don't have the storage capacity for the price... plus, there's nothing that suggests that those are in any way immune to failure over time.

A cloud isn't really something that would help us- they're a generally poor idea because they introduce a number of vulnerabilities to the system for no added benefit. Our current off-site storage is under our control, and only we have access to it. A cloud is outside your control- access to it can be lost, and/or your data can be compromised. You don't know where the hardware is, or who is touching it.

At any rate- the backups themselves weren't the issue; no data was lost. What we need is to be able to continue working even when the local storage system is being rebuilt. This will likely mean either another server on the network so that one server can be taken offline while the other is running, or something similar.
8  Forum Community / Questions, Comments and Suggestions / Re: shipping for book two on: December 05, 2013, 10:51:17 am
yeah, international shipping has been far, far more hit and miss than we'd've liked. Part of the money from book 2 will actually be going to reshipping replacement books for folks like Cheez.

If you've got an APO address, though, it should get to you through US hands and so skip most of the hassle that seems to be causing the others to go awry.
9  General Discussion / General Discussion / Re: Words on paper in this technological world, reading anything? on: December 05, 2013, 07:47:28 am
just finished reading the hunger games trilogy last night... I'd originally dismissed the books as fluff when I found out that Hollywood was doing an adaptation, but... dang. Take a story that starts with merciless bloodsport... and then go *darker* with it. The author handled PTSD and stress effects with her characters really well (or at least, so it seemed to me, who has never experienced PTSD personally). I was surprised to find that I'd rank her handling of it up there with David Drake.

I doubt Hollywood can do the characters justice... but I'm eager to find out. If they can, that'd make the actress a new favorite, easily.

They have been pretty funny so far.

The past few days have been where I realize that my solution for maximum data redundancy has failed to address maximum functional redundancy though. I think it's something I'll *have* to address for book 3... not sure how, though. I'll need to talk to an engineer friend of mine. Probably two servers that act like one virtual machine, where if one drops out, the other carries on... or something.

To be fair, we didn't *actually* do a jack-o-lantern this year...

You did what you could. You did the right thing. Keep doing the right thing, and hopefully all will end well.

I suppose if the mom hasn't already thought of it, tell her to get her daughter to a doctor or someone who can talk to her about all this. You and the mom are, well, not doctors- you don't have the training, know-how, or ability to write prescriptions.

yeah, there's nothing like putting a new audio system into your car just to be able to hear music in all its crisp, detailed glory... and then finding out that there are no crisp recordings any more and haven't been for the past 15-20 years.

Well, we'd like to do the cons, but they're expensive to go to, and unfortunately, Black Moth Design doesn't have a lot of cash, really. The money we're getting from the book 2 kickstarter will probably go toward bills, loans, and customer service issues.

I suppose it's not a huge spoiler, but, the secret $100K stretch goal was a 2014 con tour. Our kickstarter is doing well, but I don't know that it'll make that at this point, so it probably doesn't hurt to say.

Thing is, we can't know in advance whether or not we'll make our money back from any given con, so we can't really go unless we can afford to lose everything we spend on it. And right now, we can't afford that.

Aaaaaaaaaannnyway. At least the kickstarter is doing well! We've only got two redshirts left, which is pretty badass.
