Amadeus is fundamentally correct.  Roguelikes are typified by the following key characteristics.

Death is final. (saves vanish, you're toast, you're done, equipment is gone, it's time to roll a new character.)
Levels are randomly generated.
Items are normally have to be identified to understand their full use (you have a sword in your inventory, it's really a cursed sword, or maybe it's the best sword that ever existed.  You just don't know.)
Movement/combat/item use is all turn based.
Normally you are on your own, if you have a party member you can't directly control them, they just tag along.

To make it easier for people to get interested in this brutally difficult genre many games have Roguelite features such as...
Being able to stash items that persist past your death
Starting over but retaining some (or all) of your exp past death
Having party members that you can switch places with or control.

My advice?  Start with Nethack... bwahahahaha!!!!!!  BWAHAHAHA!!!! Yes, start with Nethack... it's free, the first one is always free... hehehe... *twitches*

I keep meaning to check out Anime Planet but I'm fundamentally lazy.

No, but we have cookies.

Would you like a cookie?

(Shiren) Oh shit... a Melding Jar [3] at the Jar Shop!
Either I can sell some stuff and hope it's enough (The shop is kinda small, and most of my belongings are for the final trip) or try and steal it and die in the process.
Only two ways about this.

Used a change jar and going to get a sexy Razor Wind out of it.
Still in the town though.

Third Edit, went to the previous area and after nearly starving, went back to the shop and it's now a Melding Jar [5].
7500G and I only have 2476G, but it got me drooling.

So far I've yet to survive a steal attempt.  If it wasn't for Izuna and Dark Spire I'd probably be playing Shiren more. Good luck on your run.  *tips hat to fellow wanderer.*   Some day we'll meet on the Plains of the Sun.

I can never remember the name of that sword that attacks in three directions at once, I had my Mastersword melded with one of those and it was epic.

Maybe it's just me but I would NOT feel safe in Zombie infested territory even with two chain link fences. I'm suprised they didn't clear a Prison or something.
Most prisons ARE layers of chain link fence.

What is this I don't even
It's a human body segmented with a very powerful high speed saw.  The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago has a body that has been sectioned like this on display, only that one is done top down horizontally.  This one looks to be done vertically.

Etrian Oddessy III and LA Noir.

Same question?

MasterSword Katana seems like a waste, mix it up with something that has an effect.

Dark Spire still.

I see what you mean about the HP leveling.  I'm glad I saved before I leveled and I don't feel even slightly guilty about save scumming until I got a good HP roll.  This game is brutal, I love it!  I've been doing exploratory forays into floor 1 while I get used to the game and I'm getting some early grinding in, so far I'm really impressed with the old school flava.  REALLY impressed.

EDIT:  BTW, since I made mention of the Atlus fan boy freakout in an earlier post somewhere around here I keep thinking it sounds like a wacky dance.  A dance that I must invent so that I may ridicule it with an appropriately crappy Flash animation.  I don't know why I think of these things.
