2551  General Discussion / Travel / VACATION!!! on: June 14, 2010, 11:20:23 pm
I will be gone until right around July 4th, through careful plotting and hoarding of vacation days I've managed to accrue 27 consecutive days away from work and I will travelling most of the country during that time, most likely away from computer access.  As I hit occasional wifi hotspots I may pop in but don't plan on seeing much of me until late this month/early next month.  Later all, behave while I'm gone  laugh

2552  General Discussion / Game Discussion / Re: RogueLikes... on: June 14, 2010, 11:16:30 pm
I hereby anoint this topic AWESOMESAUCE!

So... on the subject of Roguelikes I've played.

Rogue (of course) the father of them all and very good.  Amadeus, I have never had treasure drops that good that early and to have them yanked so soon thereafter is sad but seems fitting somehow.  Welcome to the Roguelikes.

NetHack is my favorite, I've spent countless hours playing it, I ascended to the astral plane ONCE, whereupon my deity personally smited me for being a heretical ass before I could claim godhood for myself.  Apparently karma IS a bitch.  Some people supposedly have games they've spent in excess of a decade playing without completing and then you have guys who have completed it in excess of 20 times within a month.  I'm happy with my puttering around and getting my ass handed to me.  Most embarrasing death?  I polymorphed into a red dragon which was fucking epic.  I tore ass through level after level of the dungeon, ripping my foes apart with claws and melting them with my fire breath.  I was unstoppable.  But... I made two mistakes.  Mistake 1.  I didn't remove my armor before polymorping, which destroyed it in the process.  2.  I drank the wrong potion, which instead of healing me reversed my polymorph.  You can imagine how long I survived in an advanced level of the dungeon with no armor...  Second most memorable death was being killed by my own ghost who had starved to death on a previous play through (yes, you can encounter ghosts of your previous failures.)

Related to NetHack I dabbled briefly with it predecessor Hack but NetHack had so many more features I didnít stick with Hack for long.

Angband is very good.  Based heavily on Lord of the Rings lore, it had a predecessor, Moria that I never played.  Angband was hellishly hard even by Roguelike standards and I never got very far into it, repeatedly being gangbanged by Nazgul and Balrog discouraged me after a while and I havenít fired this one up in years.

Doom the Roguelike is awesome, I first heard about this one from one of my college buddies who remembered my misspent time in college either playing NetHack or surfing www.doomworld.com and I canít repay him for the joy Iíve had playing this beauty.  If you like Roguelikes and Doom you just canít go wrong.

Shiren the Wanderer.  I got this for Christmas when it first came out for the DS from my cousin who thought it was just a JRPG.  Just glancing at the box I had the same impression and I put off playing it for about two weeks.  But once I did I quickly realized I had been given solid gold.  Despite the graphics (I usually prefer my Roguelikes in ASCII) itís a real honest to goodness modern roguelike.  The only concession it makes to the player in the way of ease is that you CAN stash items that will last between lives.  This may not seem like much but if you can keep taking a sword out, grinding a few levels into it and then stashing it for later it WILL make your ďfinal runĒ playthrough a LOT easier.  However this also adds a further sadistic level of soul shattering horror when the ďfinal runĒ fails short of the mark and you shriek to the gods ďI JUST SPENT FOUR FUCKING MONTHS LEVELING THAT GOD DAMN SWORD!!!!  WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?!?!?!Ē  Iíve gotten closer in Shiren to completion than I have in any other Roguelike, like close enough to see the finish line only to have it snatched away at the last possible second with the maximum amount of anguish rubbed into my already salted wounds.  I still havenít recovered enough to play it again but the itch is still there, I think any day now Iíll start climbing that damn mountain again.

Iíve heard the Pokemon mystery dungeons are ALMOST roguelikes but I havenít played them.

I think that's enough ranting for now.

If you think you like Lupin now go buy the Castle Cagliostro.  Best animated adventure movie ever made.  You will not regret watching it.

Had a water nymph steal all my gear then I was attacked by a horde of bugbears.  Only in NetHack *sigh*

Yea... I haven't touched this recently for a few reasons, the player base seems to have vanished and I'm getting ready to leave for vacation.  I won't be back until after the 4th of July and I've been informed I'll be on special projects at work when I return so I really have no clue when this going to be revived which is a damn shame because I had some big plans for Brookvale.

And the answer would be no.  The swastika points face the opposite direction.  That would be a manji.

NetHack and iNetHack are the two choices avaliable.

First impression is that Nethack is the better choice.

The only real difference between the two is NetHack uses screen motion commands similar to the Rogue Amadeus is playing right now while iNetHack has the commands buried in layer upon layer of menus.  NetHack also has a more in depth option set which will make those more familiar with the depth of the original more comfortable.  And of course the first thing I did was rename my dog.  Go Slaytooth!  (Whereas my cat is always named Hammerclaw.)  Ah, I fucking love Nethack.

My last death was starvation, Slaytooth kept eating the bodies of our slain foes before I got to them...

I searched iTunes when I got home tonight and discovered that there is now TWO versions of NetHack for free download.  I now have both and will advise which is better.

So I was recently forced against my will to watch Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland  Or should I say;  Alice in Underland: The grimdark sequel to the childhood classic where everyone is now a warrior AND crazy instead of just crazy...

Let me preface what is about to follow with this statement.  I used to fucking love Tim Burton.  The first time I saw "Vincent" and the crazy frankenstein dog thing and saw what he was doing I was floored, I thought he was brilliant.  But then he did the same exact thing with every movie he's ever done since...  My love for his work dropped off incrementally as time went on because I wanted to see something different and by different I mean not just bizzare color choices and goth swirlies.  Now that diminishing love for his works hovers somewhere between nonexistent and lukewarm at best.

I was hesitant to see Alice in Wonderland for a few reasons.  My aforementioned diminishing appreciation for Mr. Burton was one reason, another was that I loved Lewis Carrol growing up.  Nonsense is fun, and unlike a lot of things I liked while growing up his works remain fun.  Especially the Alice in Wonderland stories because the nonsense counterpointed by her struggle to remain a proper little English girl takes on new depth when you're older.  And besides, I love quoting from the Jabberwocky and the Walrus and Carpenter during conversations I seek to end quickly by baffling my oppostion conversational partner.  (btw, I have an unpublished book, 101 ways to end unwanted conversations, I can't seem to find someone willing to print a book that encourages people to stick their finger up their nose and hum the theme to Star Wars.)

So anyway, when I was informed that Alice and Wonderland was in the DVD machine on purpose and it was to remain there and I would NOT be playing Red Dead Redemption on the widescreen HD TV I figured "what the hell?" popped open a beer and settled down to watch it.

I should have drank more beer...

I didn't want to dislike it.  I figured I was just going to sit through a mildly amusing tale of nonsense with Burtons signature pastel inspired color scheme and everyone would wear too much pale makeup and flounce about among the goth swirlies.  I was right about pretty much everything but the nonsense.  Of the things I expected from the movie I did not expect to be bored most of the time.  For the majority of the time the denizens of Wonderland *cough* Underland... were suitably strange but the whole Alice is the chosen one schtick?  My gosh man, who thought that outright war in Wonderland *damn it* Underland... was a good idea?  "Let's take a wonderful fanciful tale of nonsense and apply heaps of GRIMDARKTM plus attempts to give it a coherent plot.  Nonsense is supposed to be cheeky and fun, but this nonsense was cruel and tragic... which made it not really nonsense at all...

Yes I love elipeses...

But yea, not so much nonsense, which sucked much of the fun out of it right there.  There were attempts at nonsense, there really were, but they felt strained.  Much like the famous sporks and penguins /b/ chan post it wasn't really zany...  And Alice wasn't acting  prim and proper and English, trying to impose normallacy through reason upon the chaos, she was like a walking zombie whacked out on prozac barely reacting to ANYTHING while complaining that she was dreaming.  Whoever cast her deserves a good swift kick.  Johnny Depp I can take or leave as an actor and in this case he did nothing with the role of the Hatter, or maybe I just couldn't buy the role of the Hatter as some type of warrior.  His bizzare attempts at accents didn't really seem to fit the character and the Alice/Hatter romance angle?  Srsly?  In the books, as in the old Disney Cartoon he was illustrated as being an oldish man.  Given her age when she first arrived in Undergrimdarkland, he would be at LEAST old enough to be her father if not her grandfather now which just made it creepy.  Helena Bonham Carter did a good job as the Red Queen/Queen of Hearts (they couldn't really seem to make up their minds as to which one she supposed to be, maybe both at the same time?) and her CGI was one of the best effects in the movie.  The chesire cat effects were also good.  Tweedledum and Tweedledee were just ok, I loved the March Hare, Anne Hathaway was spacey and sort of annoying but I think she was supposed to be so good acting I guess?

My biggest complaint has to be the Jabberwock though.  1.  It was a frickin' generic dragon.  Not very epic and certainly not worthy of being called the Jabberwock.  2.  The Jabberwock is a thing of nonsense and imagination, portraying it cheapened it, at least in my opinion.

The ending where she went back into the real world was retarded and felt tacked on.  I won't go quite so far as to say I hated the film but I imagine Lewis Carrol would weep if he saw it.
