Greg got me started on Dwarf Fortress, it's probably more in depth than even NetHack. It's a different breed of game though. Have you guys tried the old Rings Of Angband? It's a Lord of the Rings Roguelike and it's hellishly hard. I had always seem to get mauled by Nazgul when I play.
And my wanton computer destruction wasn't as bad as it sounds. One computer got fried when I left it over a weekend computing Pi to ridiculously long decimal places, the second one died computing large prime numbers. I had a nifty little program written that was supposed to keep track of its last prime so it would write it to a dat file when the program stopped. Sadly I had that in the wrong part of the do loop and it wrote EVERY prime to the file so the hard drive sort of ate itself. The third was just an old machine thats time had come but by that point I wasn't getting the benefit of the doubt.
