Progress check.

Out of the people who posted that they were interested we currently have...

TheLastOutlaw:  Character sheet and backstory.

Firesolved:  Character sheet, backstory in progress.

Cheez:  Getting a copy of the rules to work on his character sheet.

Raryn:  Getting a copy of the rules to work on his character sheet.

Cricco:  No update.

Log: No update.

Helmi:  No update.

This is as much for my reference as anything.  It appears we're on track to start next weekend provided I get some more backstory info in but even that seems to be on track.  Have fun =)
3002  Roleplaying / Role Playing Sign up and OOC / Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD) on: March 19, 2010, 06:20:32 am
Mercy is one of the virtues, my character is an Innocent which is one of the three Mercy creeds.  If you had an Avenger your virtue would be Zeal instead.  Every charcter starts with three virtue based on their creed.  If you want more info on the Creeds and Virtues White Wolf has a decent wiki here http://whitewolf.wikia.com/wiki/Hunter:_The_Reckoning

Conviction and willpower are a little more complex but in a nutshell it's how you use your abilities and "level up".  If you can gain 10 conviction you can cash them in and get another virtue point which can then be spent on more "edges" (which are your cool powers.)  Edges come in level, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and you can't buy a higher level edge until you have the preceding level.  In other words you have to buy 1 before you buy 2 and so on regardless of how much virtue you have.  I'll give you more detail later when I get home and get to my books.
3003  Roleplaying / Role Playing Sign up and OOC / Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD) on: March 18, 2010, 07:19:48 pm
Triggers are optional details you can add that describe what action or method your character uses to activate an edge.  Virtue is the path your character follows, Mercy, Vision or Zeal.  Characters start with 3 virtue and usually use them to buy their level 1 and level 2 edges.  Your first 3 virtue points are always keyed to your creed but you can earn virtue in other paths dependant upon your characters actions.  All of the edges are creed specific and are listed in the Mr Gone PDFs. If you need details on what the edges do let me know.

Brandon just turned 18 and should be in the middle of his senior year of high school right now.  Instead he’s recently dropped out and decided he’s going after his dream of making it big with his band; DeathWish.  They’ve been doing well lately, getting a nice following in the local club scene and he’s made enough to get a small apartment in a not completely shitty part of town and a decent motorcycle.  He has a guitar, a place of his own and hangs out in clubs all night getting hit on by hot chicks, he figures life is about as good as it’s ever going to get.  At least it’s better than his past.

Brandon grew up in a decent suburb of Brookvale, his parents had money and belonged to the right social circles, the fact that Brandon was constantly in trouble was the only thing that held them back, or so they always told him.  Brandon had never felt very close to them anyway, in fact more often than not he wasn’t home; instead he spent his time downtown hanging out with “bad influences.”  In the last few years Brandon has become an accomplished petty thief and if he had to he could make a living just through that.  He’s seen both sides of the tracks and believes that people are equally likely to be “good” or “bad” regardless of where they’re from or what their background is.  In fact his moral compass has been floating in a sea of gray itself lately.  Generally speaking he believes people are more good than evil but he’s seen his share of evil as well.

Brandon has always had a morbid fascination with death and the afterlife.  His mother tells him it’s because he watches so much of that “trash” (horror movies) but Brandon knows better, he knows it’s because there really is an unexplainable side of the world.  He had grown up not far from the old abandoned Brookhurst Manor and from an early age had seen the unexplainable there more than once, culminating in an ill advised adventure where he spent the night there during the summer after his eighth grade in school.  He never told anyone what he had experienced there that night but it further fueled his interest in the “unexplained.”  But it was around this time that the premature streak of gray in his hair first appeared as well as his chronic nightmare problem.  Brandon is naturally intelligent and inquisitive but isn’t much for book learning.

Time to post your sheets and backstory.

Hey Helmi, good to see you again.

EDIT:  FUCK YEA.  I finally found my missing Hunter books, my character sheet and backstory will definitely be up tomorrow.

I'll be posting my character sheet and backstory either later today or tomorrow.
3007  Roleplaying / Role Playing Sign up and OOC / Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD) on: March 17, 2010, 09:49:56 am
So here are the basics for character creation.

Step 1  Pick your concept, creed, nature and demeanor.

Fire covered these pretty well earlier but I'll recap.  Concept is the characters overall theme.  Examples are streetwise punk, homeless guy, divorced mom, serial killer.  The options are endless.  Creeds have already been loosely discussed for more info feel free to ask or even google the white wolf wiki.  Nature and demeanor are like Firesolved already said, nature is who your character really is.  For example Zealot is a rogue by nature meaning he's looking out for himself above all else and gains conviction by furthering his own agenda.  Rebel is his demeanor, its the face he puts on and what most people perceive him as.  The editable PDFs I linked to earlier have every White Wolf nature/demeanor already loaded in drop down boxes.  Most are pretty self explanatory and you can make up your own if you want.

Step 2.  Choose attributes.

Every attribute gets 1 dot filled in automatically.  You then have 6, 4, and 3 points to spread across each category, Physical, Mental and Social.  Just pick which category gets which priority.    (You know you want to build a socially inept tank :p)

Step 3.  Abilities

No ability goes higher than 3 at this point and these do NOT get one free dot to start with.  Spread your points out 11, 7 and 4 to Talents, Skills, Knowledges in any priority you prefer.

Step 4  Advantages.

You can spend 5 points in backgrounds and spend your 3 starting virtue points (edges).  I personally would prefer that no character starts with arsenal greater than 1 and even then I’d like to talk about why they have a gun in the first place.  I played a campaign once where the story teller let a starting character begin with arsenal 5 and the whole thing became roll dice to shoot stuff which isn’t all that much fun.    Again, the Mr. Gone PDFs are great because all of the backgrounds and edges are in the drop down boxes.

Step 5.  Finish up.

Mark your starting conviction (according to creed, everyone starts with 3 except avengers, martyrs and waywards start with 4)

Spend your freebie points.  You get 21 points to spend at this point with the following restrictions.

You can’t raise conviction over 8 points.
You can’t buy edges or virtue with freebie points.

Freebie point breakdown is as follows.
Attributes 1 dot = 5 free points
Abilities 1 dot = 2 points
Backgrounds, willpower, conviction 1 dot = 1 point

I’d prefer backgrounds or abilities not be raised above 3 dots without talking about it first, other than that go nuts.

Between this and the PDF character sheets you should be good to go, if you have any questions on specifics let me know.

http://download.white-wolf.com/download/download.php?file_id=284

You can download character sheet PDF files from White Wolf, this is the link for the oWoD Hunter sheet.

Unfortunately it's not one of the cool ones you can edit and save but it's a good reference for homebrewing your own electronic copy and it works great if you want a hard copy.  I've found MOST of my books, still missing a few creed specific splats but I should be able to track them down this week.  If anyone has questions about creating their character let me know either here or by PM.

EDIT:  My goal is to start this game by the end of next week.  I'd like to have character sheets in by sometime this weekend or early next week so I can be prepared to do that.  If someone wants to join after that point it shouldn't be a problem, just be aware that there will be some lag time while I review the character and work in a story hook for them to join with.  I don't plan on having more than 8 active players at any 1 time because in my experience anything beyond that point becomes very unwieldly, ideal forum RP size seems to usually be between 3 and 5 not including the story teller.  If anyone has any questions or comments let me know.

EDITING OF THE EDIT:  http://mrgone.rocksolidshells.com/hunter.html  Very kickass character sheet PDF, link courtesy of Greg.  If you want to edit them and save the changes use either Adobe PRO or download Foxit from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ for free.  I haven't had the chance to mess with FOXIT myself but I'm told it works.

EDIING THE EDITED EDIT:  I got a chance to mess with the FOXIT reader and it does indeed work.

3010  General Discussion / General Discussion / Re: Funny Image Thread Lives Again!!! on: March 14, 2010, 08:17:17 pm
Half Life 2 is about eight hours long, HL2 episode 1 is about 2 and a half hours long, and Episode 2 is about 6 hours long.
Half Life 2 is better than Bioshock in my Opinion.

Length alone isn't the gauge a quality.  I love the Half Life games but I think Bioshock actually has a better story.  Half life is great shooter fun but Bioshock is the first shooter I ever played that evoked real emotional response for me beyond the basic jump scare.  So it depends how you weight your games.

So here's my general plan for running this.

Here's a semi detailed description of the setting and city that the characters are going to start out in.  The game will start there but there are no specific constraints on it having to remain there.

Brookvale Illinois is a small city about an hour west of Chicago.  Being near a waterway it started out as a trading outpost called Beaver Creek back in the days of the French exploration .  As people arrived and it expanded it displaced the local people.  One of the earliest incarnations of the town was almost entirely wiped out during a spate of skirmishes with the Indians they were displacing.  Local legend has it that around this time the town was rebuilt over an Indian burial ground.  The town quickly expanded as Illinois became a state.  Prior to the Civil War a family called Brookhurst came to prominence in the town and became influential in it's further expansion and development.  The name was changed to Brookhurst Vale.  The industrial revolution came and with it one of the towns first memorable disasters.  In 1850 the foundry burned down, trapping every worker inside.  The exact cause of the fire was never determined.  By the turn of the century the town had grown to a city.  In 1927 Marcus Brookhurst, the last patriarch of the Brookhusrt family, died in a horrific multiple murder/suicide that scandalized the nation.  The city changed its name to Brookvale in an effort to distance itself from the event and the Brookhurst Manor has remained empty, though maintained as a historical landmark to this day.  It quickly gained a reputation for being haunted and Marcus Brookhurst is remembered in local lore as a boogeyman used to scare children.  The summer of 1941 is remembered for being the year of the prison riot.  The old prison, which had been built before the Civil War, was overcrowded and infamous for mistreatment of its prisoners.  Trevor Moorehouse, a man who was widely believed to be innocent of the murders he was accused of was executed, the same night the riot began and before it was over at least 60 inmates and 35 guards were dead.  The surviving inmates were never readmitted to the general population of any prison, instead being transferred to the nearby Edgewood Sanitarium.  The prison was condemned and torn down in the late 70s but not before a number of suicides occurred there.  Rumors abounded that before its destruction the abandoned prison was the site of a devil-worshipping cult.  A new prison was constructed just after the end of World War 2 on the opposite side of town and remains in active use.  Edgewood Sanitarium sits across from it, vacant for decades and condemned.  The last patients Edgewood had seen were the prisoners transferred there after the riot.  Within months all of them and the staff at the mental hospital were dead.  Brutal murders, violent and bizarre accidents and suicide claimed them all.  Nathaniel Brookhurst High School, built just after the turn of the century, was the site of a tragic accident when the stage collapsed during a school play in 1988.  Six students, two faculty and five parents died.  Rumors of the collapse not being an accident circulated following the suicide of one of the stage assistants, Marsha Bradley, the following day.  Students still claim that the school is haunted by her spirit and those of her victims.

That’s the backstory of the city, everything mentioned above is common knowledge to those who live there.  (For example your characters).  Every city has its odd events and scary stories and for over 200 years this is a sampling of the one for Brookvale that were momentous enough for everyone to know about.  When the game starts characters will be able to explore Brookvale and once imbued, surf hunter-net.org.

What is hunter-net.org?  hunter-net.org was the online resource hunters could turn to for support from other hunters or to just talk and swap info.  For the purposes of this game it will be a thread separate from the game thread where you can post in character.  Obviously your character can only post to the hunter-net.org thread if they have webernet access.  Everyone on hunter-net.org uses an alias (much like a forum, omg.) and that alias gets appended with a user number when they first access the board.  For example, my old character Zealot was Zealot1206 on hunter-net.  Another character I had was Tormented13.  Tormented had joined way before Zealot, thus the lower number.

I’m still trying to find the other half of my books, I’ll post more later.
3013  Roleplaying / Role Playing Sign up and OOC / Re: Anyone interested in Hunter RP? (oWoD) on: March 12, 2010, 01:49:14 pm
So the simple overview of the Hunters (or Imbued as the game refers to them).

They fall into three basic classes based on what the game calls Virtues:

Mercy  has three classes associated with it.

Redeemers, Martyrs and Innocents.  In broad terms these are the more peaceful Hunters who try to reconcile things with their enemies over actually fighting them.

Zeal

The three zeal classes are:

Avengers, Judges, Defenders.  These guys are much more action orientated and are more likely to kick ass than make friends.

Next up are the Vision based classes.

Visionaries, Hermits and Waywards.  Vision creeds are more about planning, psychic powers and communication.  Wayward and Hermits are also called the "LOST"creeds.  They are difficult to play as due to the fact that they start out with derangements from day one.

What’s a derangement?  In a nutshell Hunters are channeling powers not really meant for humans to use and as they get more powerful they start to crack.  I’ll finish up this post with my old Hunter character Zealot’s character sheet.  He’s been around a while and as such has a pretty full deck of crazy going on.

Whatever life the hunter who calls himself the Zealot may have had before he was imbued is gone. It has been closed off from his current life so completely it may as well have never existed. The most anyone else has been able to gather is that he was in fact happy at some earlier point in his life. That's an almost unbelievable contrast to the bitter, cheerless man that exists now.

He had lived with his long time girlfriend Katherine Donovan in a nice, upscale apartment. She was pregnant with their first child and he was planning on picking out an engagement ring any day. That is until she unfortunately turned up dead in their apartment.  He never showed up for work the day her body was found. Police who responded to a neighbors 911 call were quoted as saying, "It was unbelievable, the sheer amount of blood I mean. Enough for at least two, probably three bodies. It was like a slaughterhouse. The only body we ever found though was the girl." He was immediately taken into custody for questioning. Somehow he managed to overpower and disarm the three arresting officers and fled custody. At this time his status was upgraded to armed and presumed dangerous.

He vanished for a period of weeks, suddenly appearing in connection to an FBI arms smuggling investigation. Before agents could move to apprehend him an office building was destroyed in a horrific display of domestic terrorism. He was quickly declared the primary and indeed the sole suspect in this incident and has shot up to most wanted status. FBI profilers who uncovered one of his safe houses have declared him to be "dangerously unbalanced, quite possibly in the same magnitude as Manson or Gacy. The torture rooom he had set up was just sick, it looks like he worked some poor guy over for weeks, keeping him alive the whole time." The most shocking aspect of the bombing is the amazingly low casualty count. By official count only a handful of people were wounded. This is in direct contradiction to earlier, unconfirmed reports of "scores of bodies being pulled from the wreckage." Early film footage of rescue efforts has since become unavailable for review.

The suspect is 5'11", 190 pounds, with an athletic build, dark brown hair, green eyes. He is not known to use his real name or any other alias than “the Zealot” or simply “Zealot.” He is to be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Approach with extreme caution and DO NOT approach alone. Current whereabouts are unknown. Rumored to have fled the midwest. Unconfirmed sightings in the New England area.
