"We need these roads clear"

Because it would be impossible to detour around in this vast wasteland.

I think the dialogue bubbles work.  They sweep across the page and you see the whole thing.  And, Jenny, skill at fire is great.

If they need the roads to move equipment, they must be talking about a lot of it, or something really heavy.  If fuel isn't a problem, which it doesn't seem to be, then the helo's would be idea to move.  They are very expensive in fuel and maintenance compared to trucks in today's world, but in the TZH scenario the time/safety factor would be of higher value.  I would think.

I think you're right in your assessment of their value, but remember that the island only has a population of 5,000ish people- I doubt they'd have the manpower to be able to maintain a very large helicopter fleet, even if fuel isn't an issue. Whereas finding drivers is much easier, and ground vehicles are a lot easier to maintain.

Plus, tools and spare parts for cars and trucks can be looted from any Autozone, while helicopter parts are a bit more scarce Wink

True but the road in the foreground doesn't seem all that much better an option than off roading.  Perhaps the zombies are camped out on the stretch where it's better shape.  Or maybe Jasper is up to something and the road clearing is just a ruse.

I would just like to say that as I read up on the last month or so Gridstream.org started playing "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles.

I'm surprise so many people question the importance of roads post-zombpoc, we built highways for a reason afterall. I mean, they even stick to the roads for the most of the Road Warrior series (Beyond Thunderdome doesn't count considering they where using monster trucks for whatever bat-shit reason.)

I'm surprise you think people are saying roads aren't important. It's not that the roads are useless, it's that you can drive off of the road for a hundred feet.

Roads can be rebuilt. They might be "clearing the roads" of surviving zombies so the construction teams can come in and do their job safely.

Off-roading means higher fuel consumption, greater chances of vehicle breakdowns/getting stuck, longer ETAs. None of which is good. Good roads would be a premium.

I'm not saying off roading is the answer for all travel needs.  I'm talking about specific risk vs reward in this particular scenario.  And my initial comment was more or less in jest anyway.  But, if it's that serious and means that much to anyone I'm not going to waste mine or anyone elses time discussing it any further.  I was wrong on the internet, god help me

Whoa, Outlaw! Put the troll-slaying axe away! Just speculating. Besides I think they were more interested in trying their new method for fixing the old "zombies-on-fire-oh-shit!" problem anyway. What would that stuff be anyhow? Standard air/fuel mix wouldn't work that fast...

Woah, buddy... buddy... bring it in, man. C'mon, bring it in for a hug *opens arms*

I'm sticking with my theory that they're clearing the roads of zombies so the construction teams can come in and repair the roads.
