Hmm, cosplay. I want to make a Fallout Raider costume at some point, but meh.
Y'know that 'coca-cola removes rust' thing? I'm testing it out. Shaped an axehead today, and I'm leaving it in some cheap coke overnight to see if it can clean it up at all. Normally I'd not waste money on it, but I bought a 2l bottle about 7 or 8 months ago, it was really manky so i gave it to my housemate to use as a mixer, she didn't use it and we found it yesterday. Might as well use it as a metal cleaner seeing as we'd just pour it away otherwise.

i think it does both, as coke contains orthosomething acid, wich is supposed to eat the rust away, but probably it will react with metal too. only slower?

All the rust removing methods I know involve sandblasting or grinding. Whatever you do, just make sure you're thorough, removing half is worse than not touching it.
Edit:
No idea if it works fast enough to be of any use on iron (good for silver and bronze though) but in theory:
It'll work if the container is made of an electropositive metal, or contains a piece of such metal. Aluminium would do, magnesium even better. The metals have to touch or be connected, so electrons can flow between them. And that piece of metal shouldn't be too precious, because its surface will be damaged.
