That is seriously fucked up. Over here you only have to pay if you have satellite or cable. You can watch local channels for free as far as I know.

Unless you're me...I have satalite and don't pay, thanks to a loophole in the system. the family of a friend of mine was already paying for the box, but not using it, and I already have a dish thanks to a previous renter of the house I'm living in, so they're letting me use the box. Can't watch any Pay Per View, but that's fine...I wouldn't anyway.

Lets see...
Just watched the Season Premiers of Family Guy, The Simpsons, The Cleaveland Show, and American Dad (Because I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old).
But I have also been trying to watch SuperJail, but the channel is messed up so it cuts out like, ever 5 seconds.
Then there's South Park and such, I don't really watch much Teevee unless I'm bored, or if there's a new episode of one of my favorites on.

VCR in the house just to watch vids? Pay the Fee.

Actually, that ain't true. chances are, the licensing changed since you checked it. When i moved into university accommodation last year I checked the rules, found out that if you're just using your TV to watch videos/DVDs or to play games then no license is needed. However, if you're watching live TV on anything that ain't a TV (iPod, computer, etc) then the fee has to be paid. Catchup stuff is fine though.

It's not a TV owning charge, it's one for receiving signals.
