I've never listened to Alestorm in any serious manner. I mean, I'm doing it right now, and their cover of "You are a pirate" is awesome, but I don't know how I feel about their vocals.


It really just makes me want to listen to the- wow, they really just said "You're listening to the new Alestorm Album, remember, piracy is a crime." Ruined the whole band for me. Here's me, washing my hands of them.

AP 2 : BBC 4 tonight had a show called "Old Jews Telling Jokes". It was various old Jewish people telling jokes. I laughed until I had trouble breathing.

Well seeing as they're a  PIRATE metal band and all their songs are about piracy maybe it was intended as a joke? And idk how much they'll make since tickets are only $20 a person and that gets split between the club owners and all 6 bands playing

I never did understand why everyone assumes that any band is wealthy.  Touring does shit for the pocketbook, merch is where they make the money and with internet piracy as commonplace as breathing most small labels and indie bands are hardest hit.  You think you're sticking it to the "man" when you download music off the net?  Take a look around, the big labels are still there.  They're diverse enough to absorb piracy costs, they're bitchin' because profits are down but they're still profiting.  It's the small guys that are getting fucked.  They work with much less overhead and are much harder hit when people rip them off.  Look at the rise and fall of Fat Wreck-Chords for a case study.  If you like a band, buy their shit.  End of story.

I'm old enough to remember the "Home Taping Is Killing Music" campaign. It didn't. What kills music is corporate drivel, shutting venues, and making it damn near impossible for a pub or club to host a live gig due to all the red tape.

And yea, the mix tape haters were stupid.  We made mix tapes because we HAD the music.  Duh.  The MP3 player killed the art of making a good mix tape.

You think you're sticking it to the "man" when you download music off the net?

No one genuinely believes that they're "Sticking it to the man" when they're downloading music, and if they say they are they're trying way too hard.

Touring does shit for the pocketbook, merch is where they make the money and with internet piracy as commonplace as breathing most small labels and indie bands are hardest hit. 

Most bands make their money FROM touring. Record labels give bands such a small fraction of the merch cost (Around 25 bucks for every grand made That's my source for that, take it or leave it.), whereas bands get to keep most of the money they get for live shows. The live shows are how bands make their money, that's their fucking job. Even at the show Nerd is going to (he said it's a club, and I'm going to say that there will be 120 people), with the money split seven ways (I'm just going to say the club is taking a full share. They won't be.) That's 350 bucks in the band's pocket for an hour's "work". Maybe not so rich as I appeared to be making them out to be, but I've never earned that in a couple days of straight up busting my ass. And then they'll be doing it again in a day or two. And then again, and then again, and then again. From the looks of it, Alestorm's been touring since they could actually go out and tour.

If you like a band, buy their shit.  End of story. 

This is obvious, I'm just not someone who is willing to pay what little cash I have for a band that seems like they'll be awesome, but in the end I just wind up not liking them. I normally check Pandora and the like first, but I still prefer to listen to the record as it was intended to be played. If I don't like a band, I delete their music. If I do like a band, I save up some money and buy their shit, preferably concert tickets. I know not everyone is going to agree with me, but I firmly believe that record companies are worse than pirates.

This is pretty much the heart of my argument. Oh, and also fucking AWFUL taste is ruining the music industry.
