Hokay, so I have kind of a bold idea, Sarge, and since you're the main man behind this, you obviously get the final say, but here goes.
Name: Bethany Northrup
Nickname (If any): Mama Betty (Anthony), Beth
Height: 5' 5"
Weight: 110 lbs.
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Brown
Pre-infestation profession: Elementary School Teacher
Personal skills: Bethany has a natural affinity to young people that borders on empathic. She knows how to prevent heated conversations from erupting, and has arbitrated her fair share of settlements, both between children and adults. Though arts and crafts can seem unlikely to be a useful skill, she also knows how to weave a mean basket.
Jobs in the apartment:
Physical appearance: Bethany shows her 32 years on this Earth proudly, but humbly. Her hair is just above shoulder length, oftentimes tied in a bun. Her hazel eyes light up when she speaks, though there is a noticeable shadow beginning to dull their spark. Her button nose, soft skin, and soft lips speak to a woman who has aged well, with the beginning of crow's feet and other wrinkles forming due to recent events. Her body hints at a formerly healthy amount of weight, slowly being lost with the struggle for survival. Despite the weight loss, her frame speaks of a well-toned body that can hold its own.
Bethany wears modest attire most of the time, mostly out of habit of her career. A casual knit shirt covers her average chest (a blessing during these trying times), and a sweater keeps the cold out and the eyes of roving scavengers away. A shin-length, detachable skirt, knee-length shorts, and sturdy walking shoes complete her average outfit. When preparing for a dangerous mission or long trek, she generally ties up her hair, and removes all but the most essential articles to keep from being caught by grasping hands. She is proud of her appearance, but will not hesitate to forsake it in lieu of survival.
-Small: Hairbrush, hand sanitizer ("Hygiene is still important, even now. If you don't have your health, you don't have anything."), matchbook (contains 15 sticks), Pocket Bible, Joy's copy of Aesop's Fables
-Medium: Beretta 9mm (taken from a stray corpse), Ice Pick
-Large: Home-made haversack (Able to hold most small and medium gear), Crowbar
Personality: Bethany is not a meek individual, despite what her appearance might bely. She has an iron will and tenacity that has allowed her to maneuver the zombie infested land with little difficulty. She is a kind, caring individual, however, and has on many occasions put herself at personal risk for the sake of others. She cannot let a cry for help go unanswered without exhausting all possible options, including those that endanger herself. Despite this very dangerous trait, she has managed to take care of herself, and others, on her personal crusade to lead humanity from this Hell on Earth.
She is not a religious fanatic, but she does believe that God has unleashed these demons, made by Man's own devices, to test His children and see if they are worthy of the planet they walk on. Her faith, and her personal resolve, keeps her body strong and her spirits high. Deep down, however, she wonders if she is but to be one more unworthy sinner witness to His wrath. Only He has the answer, however, and she will not go down without a fight.
History: Bethany Northrup was born to an average Midwestern American family. She was the first child out of three attempts, and her parents loved her unconditionally. Her early years were spent emulating her mother, Joy Westfield Northrup, who ran a neighborhood day care. Joy was part of a community that believed in sharing knowledge, and to the little ones she gave the knowledge of morality and faith. Every day, the children would gather around the wool carpet and listen to "Mama Joy's" verses and fables.
As Bethany grew up, she continued to follow her mother's teachings, following the very teachings she learned when little Joseph Northrup, Jr. entered the world as she began middle school. While Joseph Sr. paid his dues for his families, and Joy continued her daycare, young Bethany raised Joseph Jr. as she would if he was her very own. This mothering quality stayed with her throughout high school, where she was known as the girl anyone could go to. Long ago, she had decided to follow this trait, and centered her education to become a teacher. While on the way, she found young love in a high school sweetheart named Paul.
Joseph Sr. would later announce at her wedding reception that, "My son and I couldn't be more blessed, with two beautiful women watching over us. She made a fine mother to us, and she'll be a grander mother to her own." Unfortunately, it was revealed shortly after her honeymoon that Bethany was barren. Rather than drown in grief, she took it as a sign from the Father that she was meant to be a mother not to her own, but to all. She focused on her studies, while Paul carried out the traditional role of bread winner. She kept close ties with her family, and visited regularly, especially as her mother fell ill with a terminal cancer.
Eventually, Paul's work led them further away, and Bethany found work at a public elementary school. Bethany loved her work, and her children loved her.
That was when the outbreak began. Bethany had just received word of her mother's passing the night before, and as the morning began, she took out the old yellowed copy of Aesop's Fables that Joy had used to bring morality to her daughter so many years before. She intended to share that gift with her children, in honor of her mother. She was halfway through The Tortoise and The Hare when the screams began. She told everyone to remain calm and stay in their seats, even as gunfire could be heard rattling outside. Opening the door of the classroom, Bethany looked out into the hallway, just as a pair of blazing red eyes stepped before her. An explosion from the opposite wall sent the children running in panic as Bethany fell, paralyzed.
Her nights are forever replaying the horrible image of that day, as she saw her children being consumed by the undead. It was a miracle she did not die herself, and was determined to make use of it. Now she leads her only child in search of other lost souls, and one way or another, she will make sure Hell's debt is paid in full.
Name: Anthony Fleming
Nickname (If any): Tony, Little Bear (Bethany)
Height: 4' 3"
Weight: 60 lbs.
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Black
Pre-infestation profession: Child
Personal skills: Anthony's biggest advantage in this new world is his size, which allows him to reach places most adults could never get into, and most undead can't force themselves through. His light weight also means he is able to piggyback and not be too much of a hindrance, so long as the person is in good shape.
Jobs in the apartment:
Physical appearance: Little Anthony is an average boy. His skin is a light tan, natural pigmentation. His face is round, but not fat. With large eyes, a button nose, and two loose front teeth, Anthony has sometimes been likened to a teddy bear, particularly with the surprising amount of "fur" on his head.
Anthony is usually seen walking around with whatever articles of clothing Bethany can find. What she does find, she makes fit him. What she can't find, she makes for him. This includes a shirt, jeans or pants, one very worn jacket, and shoes.
-Small: Pack of cards (Baseball Stars on the back), 16 pack of crayons, Lighter
-Medium: Mini-LED flashlight
-Large: Aluminum Junior Softball Bat
Personality: Anthony has a very curious mind, even after the horrors he has witnessed. He knows things are not supposed to be this way, and he wonders what happened to make it so. He is completely and utterly attached to "Mama Betty" and is rarely away from her side unless told otherwise from Bethany herself. Even when running into other survivors, Anthony hides behind Bethany until she lets him know it is okay to come out.
He is still trying to understand exactly why he cannot go back home and see his family, and he will break down and cry at times until Bethany comes along and reminds him that "Father will see us through." He has never met this Father she speaks of, but she trusts Bethany, and he knows if he stays with her, everything will be alright.
History: Anthony Fleming was born to disturbingly distant parents. They raised him as a baby, but never really bonded with him. Being Atheists, they never educated him in religion, instead attempting to instill in him a sense of finality. Being a child, he understood none of this, and lived his life as much as his parents allowed, learning his grammar, vocabulary, and other essential skills in public school. Then he met Bethany.
With "Mama Betty", Anthony felt a warmth he'd never noticed with his parents, and she quickly became his favorite teacher. He would find every excuse to come to school early or stay late, just so he could be near Bethany. It was through Betty that he first heard of the Holy Father, though he still didn't quite understand. One day, Anthony noticed Bethany seemed quieter than usual, but she said she had a special treat for them all, and brought out an old book. Anthony listened with rapt attention as she read the fables to the class, not even noticing the noises until she stopped.
He listened to her as she told everyone to stay put, even as the gunfire rattled outside. Even as she fell to the ground. Even as his classmates ran out screaming and into the waiting arms of strange looking adults that scared him. He listened to Bethany and stayed there, until Bethany got up, looked around the room in a panic, and ran over to him. She picked him up, and he held onto her tight as she ran out the door, past the strange adults that were stooping over his classmates.....
