Because it looks bad. I mean, yeah, it sucks that people would rather we not do whatever we want whenever we want to do it, but it happens.

Not really Stan. Science require a good amount of math, you'd find it harder if it wasn't fresh in your memory.
Also: Democracy means that if a majority of a given population is uncomfortable with others doing things they don't approve of, they have the power to repress it. Who demands harsh penalties of their government will tolerate it from their private institutions too. Americans like boundaries more than the rest of us; of course we don't have to approve, or to pretend we do, but ultimately their culture and institutions are up to them.

but.. uhhh why would campus worry about students getting sued for property damage, etc?
Looks bad on them. Also, the students could damage university property, then it'd be their problem.

I'm really not even being that sarcastic. It does suck.
and it's more "Land of freedom as long as you're not directly stepping on anyone else's shit." than it is "Anarchytown."

feeex from what i seen here. like... letting people do things that could end badly, but knowing that there will be consequences. instead of you know, forbridding whatever thing that can end badly.

From what I can remember from my government class 8 years ago is that "freedom" is a privilege, and "free speech" etc... has restrictions. Like, you can say what you want about someone, as long as it's not slander.

And that's why it's the Land of Freedom. And really, from what you've seen here, it's "These schools are attempting to look good to the parents of perspective students". Granted, There is some bullshit because of the whole "Majority rule" plus "Everyone else is fucking retarded" thing.

What I find most deplorable with it is not the rules per se but how disproportionate punishment is seen as perfectly normal. There's a line between enforcing the rules and power tripping, and the present case crossed it largely. I can perfectly understand not wanting pot in the rooms, because it's a fire hazard and stinks up the place, just like cigarette. It belongs outside or in places that have the matching insurance plan. (yes, you have to pay extra to insure a building where smokers live) But you also have sane ways to deter that.
The college I'm now going to has been dealing with the most common infractions by posting reminders of the rules involved at the entrances. The message it gives is "what you've been doing has been noticed" and that is enough for most people to think twice. If punishment is the first thing attempted, it doesn't leave much room for a plan B...

But that's what they're going for, isn't it?
"Hey, Parents, see what happens to partiers? See what happens to people who let partying go? Yep."
I mean, shit, if I have a daughter, there's no way in hell I'd be comfortable letting her go to a party school.

Today, or, well, yesterday I learned I worry too much, and I need to chill out. But sometimes I can't help it. I'm worrying right now, even.

Log: I was about to answer that I didn't understand your answer, but then I just understood! US colleges are funded by daddy's money. Québec colleges are funded by tax money. Québec colleges have to convince the government that what they teach is useful and that the students do learn it. US colleges have to seduce daddy. That makes the difference in philosophy much more understandable, and at the same time much sadder.
Aaaand.... Today I learned how NOT to use a lancet. I prefer not to comment on the result.

I would really like to know what your sources are. Granted, I've only gone to a Cal Poly, and to a Community College, but I know people that have gone to other schools, and not just ones in California, and no public college that I know of panders to parents. Pandering to the government? Definitely. A lot of colleges is the US get their funding through grants from various government organizations (DoD and Department of Ag being the most notable).
