Anybody have any experience with urban exploration? Apparently, there's an abandoned insane asylum nearby that my buddy went to; he's still too freaked by some *stuff* he saw, but I'm pretty stoked for going (probably alone, knowing my wimpy friends).
Thoughts? Advice? Stories?

Yeah, I've some advice.

1. Make sure that someone knows where you'll be going and when you expect to be back by. Report in if you go past this time.

2. Test floors before putting your full weight on them. Going through the floorboards is not fun.

Not done any of this 'urban exploration' stuff myself, but I have poked around plenty of old buildings.

Have some form of legal weapon on you, crowbar etc, have water (no booze at all!) a lighter, torches and batteries, some form of aerosol, rope, phone.

Hahaha, I have a game with my friend, that if he EVER asks me if I have my knife and LED flashlight, and I say no, I owe him a dollar. It's common knowledge amongst my friends that I NEVER leave without my knife and light.
So, by 'torch', I assume you mean 'flashlight'?

Correct. c:

I would also advise to make sure that you go to places that aren't really inhabited by the police. It can cost a hefty sum to get caught trespassing. There's an abandoned Prison by my parents home and a couple of friends and I went to look around, but in a few short moments cops were all over. (We didn't get caught). Yes. I haven't gone around DC to look for some abandoned buildings because 1. Homeless and 2. the abandoned buildings are in the worst parts of town, so I would probably...uh...die if I went into one.

Other than that, have fun. : D

Okay, all I've been able to figure out about my buddy going to the asylum is that signs kept disappearing in front of their eyes, and he's refusing to even show me how to get there; all I know is it's in some Bear Creek in Austin. Sounds like I'm in for some fun!

I've always wanted to do Urban Exploration. There was this old abandoned hospital in town, my friend even offered for me to go along with them, but I chickened out, not to long after the place was demolished. Ah well. Would be nice if there were more buildings of that type around here.

There's this old burnt down school near where I live and some people I know went once or twice but they said the cops keep a close eye on it, but I still think it would be totally awesome to go. Maybe in the summer I can convince some people to go...

Hurrr forgot about this thread.
When dealing with stuff like cops, once you've slipped by, there are a few simple rules to (probably) not get in trouble:
1. Don't make a lot of noise (breaking things, yelling, etc)
2. Stay in cover, so they don't see you (pretend you're a ninja!)
3. Just don't do anything ELSE illegal, so if you DO happen to get caught, they're more likely to be lenient. Every time a cop has stopped me when roaming around some fenced-in places, they've let me go, and are quite friendly, just because it was clear that I wasn't going to do anything destructive, and I was polite.

Hey, I've seen a lot of people flipping out over nothing and getting arrested; I figure it's worth mentioning. I've had a cop go from pointing a gun at me to laughing and joking with me.  angel

With my buddies, I'm the designated "Cop guy", I'm pretty good with authority, and I can talk my way out of pretty much every situation.

Drawing this out of the dark ages: We're finally going in just a few minutes; carrying a satchel with ibuprofen, a flashlight, rubbing alcohol, gauze, and tape. I'll post pics if it doesn't turn out to be demolished.
