Nintendo has announced the successor to the DS. It will apparently be able to produce 3D graphics without any glasses... holograms?
Anyway, here's the translation to the press release:
Quote
Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS" (temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

"Nintendo 3DS" (temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125 million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.

What's the point, there is no real reason to play the DS with 3D effects.

Unless they're going to use it go make some really trippy shit, it'll probably have a Wario Ware game too.

It would make the Yu-Gi-Oh games more interesting.

Was Yu-Gi-Oh interesting in the first place? XD

Anyways, I must say the concept sounds pretty cool, if it gets some good games and looks totally awesome I'll have to get it eventually, but for now I'm fine with my DSi!

This sounds completely stupid and Nintendo is just trying to fit in with the new 3D fad, which is really annoying.

The only thing I care about is to see how they do the 3D cause they have said you won't need the glasses.

There's a 3D fad?
Anyways, if Nintendo can make some totally bitchin' games for it, then yeah, I'll definitely get it.
And look at what they can do with the DSi Camera! If they can do stuff like that with the 3DS, then that will be awesome!

I was interested in this too and it's kind of lame. It's called the Parallax Barrier. In a nutshell there's little slits that each eye sees independently which produces the 3d image, but a major drawback is that you have to be at a specified distance away from the screen else it doesn't work, so you can't hold it too close or too far away.

So, I hear that it's going to be able to sense where you are and adjust the slits accordingly.

 Shocked

Well that's just badass...although that makes me wonder how it tells the difference between me and an inanimate object that may be closer to the sensor...
