I read some advice like that for visiting New york city. It said something to the effect of dont stare at the skyscrapers, it shows that you have never seen one.

For me thats not such a problem, I live close to st. louis so I have seen tall buildings.

That's true. In New York, don't look up. It marks you as a tourist. Also it indicates to pickpockets that you're an easy target.

I went to New York once. My choir got the chance to sing Faure's Requiem at Carneghie Hall.
