If you have a Walmart or Home Depot anywhere around then you can more than likely get wire tools and all, and for under $50
My mail making equipment cost about £5-6 (Two needlenose pliers at about a pound each and a pair of aviation snips at about £3, £3.50ish). Not sure exactly how long it is, but a roll of garden/fencing wire costs about £1.50. 't ain't expensive at all. The mandrel I made from some scrap wood and metal. Cost 99p for screws, that's it. Personally I wouldn't recommend a knitting needle. Having your mandrel in a frame makes it a lot easier, and I'd imagine a knitting needle to be a pain in the arse to put a handle on. Speaking of, photos in a mo.

I think cooking certainly does count as art. Even if you're strictly using a recipe, give two people the same recipe and you'll get two dishes that taste completely different, just like two people drawing the same still life, they'll always look independent of one another. Having your mandrel in a frame makes it a lot easier, and I'd imagine a knitting needle to be a pain in the arse to put a handle on.
This is true, having a proper mandrel in a frame makes coiling astoundingly easier, but it takes a lot more set up just to try chainmaille and is a bigger let down if you decide it's not for you. When I used knitting needles by the way, I didn't alter them at all, I just pinched the wire to the needle by hand and twisted the wire around it by hand as well...it's much harder work just to get a smaller coil of rings, but I just wanted to play with some rings to see if I'd like it before making a bigger commitment in time and money.

Interesting, that. For me, making a mandrel was the economical option. This is the second one I made, after my mate borrowed my first and decided to make a byrnie. I'll not be getting that back for a while, so i made this one. The handle sucks, but meh. Short bar is short. All I could find. EL RAYO! A while back, a friend of mine had a Mexican themed fancy dress party. I went as a luchador. Made it out of a tshirt. EDIT- Made a casting ladel. Ingredients: a section of computer case, a pipe taken from a beer keg and two nails. I'll post up photos of the actual casts when done.

Well, do you use one or two needles? One needle is crocheting. Crochet needles also tend to have a hook on the end. 2 needles are used for knitting.

Since my ego can't sustain it's own art thread I'll just toss this in here. After a VERY long time of not drawing anything I present... Franken FranDrawn this morning with pencil and marker.

Hmm, not bad. Though, I'd say this thread's more for crafty physical stuff than drawing. Meh, 's no big deal.
