So I'm one of those guys who's always complaining about the latest big budget remake of a movie I previously loved. I'm a picky fanboy, what can I say? Which is what makes this idea I just had all the more interesting/odd.
What if YOU got to pick the next big budget remake of a classic movie? What if you got to pick the cast, concept, whatever? What would you do?
Me? I'd remake the Miyazaki classic, "Castle of Cagliostro." Still one of my all time favorite movies (yep right up there with Blade Runner, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars Episode 4.) Big budget, live action with CGI to get those epic backgrounds and castle shots that wouldn't exist otherwise. Shot for shot there's nothing to change, but it would be cool to give it a modern high definition upgrade. I probably wouldn't want it with an "A List" Hollywood cast and in fact probably wouldn't even want to see it in English. I'd be perfectly content to watch a subtitled Japanese dub.
So that's my bizarre perfect movie scenario, what's yours?

o.o I'm gonna have to mull this over... My first thought was to say Ghostbusters: great movie that could use some high budget graphics, but then I thought anything without the original actors would be horrible and there's no reason to make the original actors re-do what they already made perfectly. *goes off to think about something that was good but not great*

The Road to Camelot. It's the first thing I thought of when I read the title. Not sure why, but whatever.

Witchfinder general. But then again, there are no actors now that can achieve anything near Vincent Price's acting work so maybe it's better to let the old movie rest.

Shit, I can already tell that when I become a big hotshot filmmaker I'm going to have to remake "Scott Pilgrim."
I was rereading the comics, and 5 pages into the first volume I thought "Michael Cera can't act this scene...or at all." Worst casting decision I've seen this year.

Logan's Run
Great movie, but very very dated. I know they'd ruin it if they remade it (like Rollerball), but it's one of those great premise movies that they could the exact same script for.

Okay, I may get shot for this.
A COMPLETE OVERHAUL OF THE ORIGINAL PLANET OF THE APES MOVIE.
K. A complete update of the original movie. Same plot, same puns, same everything but the actors and special effects. This needs to be done. Fuck you if you liked Tim Burton's, his flaw of him remaking this movie is a travesty in its own right. I would like to see a remake, it'd be nice to see. However, then again, why ruin something that's already too good?

That's what I thought too, but after discussing the topic with my brother, I'm gonna have to ask, does a re-mastering edition constitute a "remake"? If so, I'd go with a remastering of Ghostbusters, so in the scenes where they show the ghosts/staypuff man it'd just look a little less cheesy.

There aren't that many good films I'd like to see remade. But I would like to see a remake of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter with a budget. Get Woody Harrelson to play Jesus, Kate Beckinsale as Mary Magnum, Hugh Jackman to play Father Eustace. Oh and I want John Woo to direct the fight scenes and Motorhead to cover the title track. Then it could be truly awesome.
Or Tromeo & Juliet. Keep the script the same but hire some proper RSC thesps to play the parts. I can only dream of seeing the likes of Patric Steward or Ian McKellen delivering lines like "A word with me? How about a word for me? Or better yet, how about a word for you? Let's see, a word for Tyrone Capulet. Boofball. Dickbag. Peon. Freak. Cocksucker. Shithead, ratcatcher, geek. Loser, anus, fruitcake, lunk, fiddlefucker, dweeb, feeb. Cunt. Assfuck; ah, that one's close to the mark. How 'bout guinea, schmuck, or pussyfart?"

Speaking of Troma... CHOPPERS CHICKS IN ZOMBIE TOWN!!! With Motorhead doing the soundtrack. Or "Die You Zombie Bastards!" with Motorhead doing the soundtrack and Lemmy (of The House of Motorhead) in it? As opposed to constantly referenced in it. And how about "Razor Blade Smile". But we keep the delightful Ms. Eileen in the rubber catsuit?
