Ok, I'm an amateur and will remain so, but it's fun and I feel like I'm doing some things right so I'll show off!
I'm using Blender, so far I love that program.

This is a model of my iguana. I have yet to add textures and colours and I have the feeling that it'll take more time than shaping it, but it's all good for learning.

The other images I've bothered to save screenshots of are:
The nut as seen in my avatar.
Fanart of Sammich's macho penguin
A couple of glasses That was mostly made following the instructions in a tutorial on applying basic textures.

Nifty iguana. I tried Blender myself a while back. Couldn't figure it out though.

When I first downloaded it I tried playing with the buttons until things happened, but I really got nowhere like that, there are way too many functions to learn right without some guidance at first. I'm going through the Blender tutorial on Wikibooks(there) and everything made sense. I didn't begin the animation and game sections yet, but for the modeling it works well.

Today I learned hot to make hair! And eyes too! But I didn't figure out how to make the hair coloured, so it's all white for now. I called this guy Surfer Boy, for greater justice!

Cheesy Awesome stuff! Especially Surfer Boy. Awesome hair, the colour seems to fit. Also, nice skin. It's not all one colour. XD Something additional, I find, is adding some faint blue veins, and a few random small blotches here and there. Another cool effect is changing the luminance so there's a sort of faint light on the edges of the skin. If that makes any sense. Not sure how any of that can be done in Blender though. XD Blender is moonspeak to me.

I know the white hair looked good on him, but since my point was to find out how to add colour, I changed it. It turned out the problem was specularity: since the hair are only about one pixel wide, the glare took all the room and didn't allow the colour to show through. Now it's black, the blue tint is reflexion of the background. I also added eyebrows and defined the teeth a little. And I took one of Sammich's advice and played with the lighting. I did it the way the Blender tutorial recommands though, it says to have the main light source set as you want, but have at least two other lamps surrounding the scene, because in real life light never all comes from the same direction. Unless you're being laz0red. I didn't touch the skin but I'll play with that later.

I am now a cartoon:

Hair is still behaving unpredictably. This time, it decided that the inside of the object was the outside and vice versa. I worked it by making it grow "inward", but it made most modifiers unavailable since the hair would jump back inside the head whenever I tried applying them. It's also lighter than I want it. I didn't want to kill all specularity like in the last, but I can't seem to find a balance where hair looks shiny but it doesn't drown out the colour.

I found that adding teeth to face models was bothersome and even difficult, so I made one "mouth" model that has the teeth, gums, tongue and palate, so I'll only have to import it into future documents and shove it in place.

I'll have another portrait (not of me, it's a forumite, I'll let you guess) ready in a couple of day(face is all done, but I want to add a body and background), but I won't be needing this yet, he has his mouth closed.

(you-know-who-you-are: don't spoil the surprise Tongue)
