PERFECTLY PLAUSIBLE! Lenses were just expensive and hard as shit to get right back then. Yeah, but what's the point? Muskets weren't accurate enough to need scopes. It'd be like using a scoped shotgun. Also, the range of a musket means a scope wouldn't be needed even if they were more accurate- for example, the 'Brown Bess' had an effective range of 175 yards/160m, and was rarely used in combat from more than 50 yards/46m away. Also, I don't know about the setting you plan on using this in, but unless they use smokeless powder (invented 1884), chances are all you'd see through the scope after the first shot is grey/white fog anyway. (Disclaimer: Most of the info in this post is taken from Wikipedia, so take it with a pinch of salt.)

You know... there are scoped shotguns They are used quite a lot. Though I agree on that a scoped musket is useless.

True on all points. However the 'scope' in the picture is just a spyglass, and an old one at that. It really isn't made for extremely long-distance shooting like modern scopes. So it basically just serves as a more accurate iron sight, like the ACOG sights of today. So yes, it's unessecary. But my character likes it anyway. It makes his enemies think he's more accurate than he really is. But I honestly hadn't thought of the smoke problem. I'll have to work on that. Wouldn't opening the breech to reload let a lot of the smoke out and cut down the size of the cloud though?

Not really, seeing as the smoke is fired out the front when you fire. opening the breech to reload wouldn't change this. You know... there are scoped shotguns They are used quite a lot. Huh. I didn't know that, actually. Learn something new every day, I guess.

a well designed muzzle brake might direct most of the smoke in a different direction. although this would make the gun recoil in a weird way. names: -your mom -Don Juan -Don -Ivan -Nikolai -Jan

A mage academy and a lightning rune is more realistic than a gun with a scope?
Also, I don't mean to be a dick, I'm just busting chops.
