Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja (DS), Doom the Roguelike and Angband (I know TLO swears by it). Can't vouch for the sequel to Izuna, as I haven't played it yet.
TLO swears AT Angband

Did you purchase it yet? You've been given enough time; don't make us send the goons... Shiren sounds very complicated...
It's not too complex; it's all about finding equipment that you'll need, finding that certain special something(s) and then upgrading them over the process of a few games, dying, having your soul crushed, storing items/upgrading equipment (For this case, ones that you intend to use for your journey to the Plains of the Sun) until you feel ready to take on the Plains of the Sun only to die because you made a stupid mistake and then have the game spit on your corpse... Soul crushing despair... But not too complicated, just like most roguelikes; except this one is so forgiving as to allow you to keep items that are stored in the storehouse.

I'm on the cusp of my final Shiren run. I finally found an armband of calm which protects against confusion. I have my Mastersword+19 and Armorward +12. 30 or so wooden arrows and both Kechi and Pekegi (Oryu died in the mines.) Plus I have a storeroom jar if things look like they're going completely to shit. I'm at the point of no return, the mountaintop village before the marsh. After this it's a hard run to the Golden Plains of 15 hellish levels, broken only by the underground stream village which has NO store room.
The last time I stood looking down this staircase and thinking I was ready I paid the ultimate price... Should I wait until my whole party is with me? Do I need more riceballs? Should I buff my Sword more first? I'm going to save it and sleep on it. This game is going to drive me insane...

This is a roguelike, so yes. If it can happen, it will happen. Or it won't happen. Better safe than sorry.

Armband of Calm = Win. And where did you get such a beauty? And the Storeroom Jar? Some mad suspense there... I would be shaking in anticipation of that run.
And it's a roguelike: It will happen.

Storeroom jars are rare drops, I've found three or four since I've been playing. The amulet I'm not sure, I found while reviewing my loot I had stashed in my storerooms, I don't remember where I found it...
I'm going to hold off on my final run for now but I am so close I can taste it...

I don't normally ask to be rescued but I just died in Shiren in the first level of the mine, right after mountaintop town. Normally I would just shrug and restart but I was in the process of moving stuff between storerooms and the this would be a huge setback for me. If anyone is interested I'll post the password.

I'm game. Might have to bring a few items to ensure my survival. And which floor specifically?

I'll be honest, I'm not sure if those are zeros or o's but whichever they are they're the same. I died right at the start of floor 8, the first floor of the mines. After a bad run in with a spikebomb I took two steps towards the massuese guy for healing and got nailed by a skull mage from across the room I hadn't noticed.
Thanks man, if you ever need a rescue let me know.

No problem, we roguelike players have to stick together! And it's a 0, the O is canceled out.
Found a Katana +1 on Old Cedar Road (1) and an Armor Ward on Old Cedar Road (2), with a few Big Riceballs, shouldn't be long.
Nearly a heart attack on Old Mines (8 )... Walked down a corridor into a Monster House and that step was also a sleep trap. Fortunately a Skull Mage teleported me away.

Sweet, you should be able to keep whatever you find plus the monk is supposed to reward you as well for helping another wanderer. I've been told some of his rewards are rare drops you can't get otherwise.
EDIT: Be careful with armowards, they make you hungry twice as fast as other shields. And watch for those f*cking rice changers, I had a jar with two blastwave scrolls and two scrolls of need turned into a riceball today. Between that and my humiliating death my Shiren cart almost ended up over Niagara Falls. (Which were very nice today I might add.)
