If I'm not mistaken, it's a spillway for the Monticello dam, known as the Morning Glory.

No offense to anyone who may have lost someone to that big death hole, but if somebody deliberately jumped in that thing they probably deserve what they got.  Don't jump into giant watery death holes filled with turbines.... and death.  It's just common sense.

Regardless, I bring you awesomeness.

Although if that hole has a valve and someone goes swimming while it's closed, then it would look a lot less dangerous than it is...

http://daviswiki.org/Morning_Glory_Spillway
There's no valve or spinning blades of death at the bottom. It's a giant cement tunnel. Rather than water spilling over the dam, it goes down the spillway.

Quote
For obvious reasons, swimming near the glory hole is both prohibited and stupid. There are buoys strung across the lake to discourage boaters and swimmers from approaching the glory hole and the dam. Furthermore, the glory hole is well fenced off from the land. In 1997, a UC Davis graduate student was pulled into the glory hole while swimming and drowned.

Glory hole.... I didn't know what that was.  So I googled it.

I want you to know that I hate you for bringing that to my attention...
I will never be able to scrub that knowledge from my brain.

Anyway this thing is awesome.

I was going to mention the S&M Morris Dancers troop who have a dance manoeuvre called "Glory Hole" but i see that there is now no need. Yes, I used to read Bizarre Magazine before it got too expensive and too difficult to get ahold of. Still got the first 1`00 or so issues in the flat. Bloody hilarious.
